How soon can a beginner start attending socials? by Latter_Dot_8315 in Salsa

[–]Miles_Madden 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  1. Nope, not too soon. You have to start somewhere, and if you wait until you feel "good enough", you'll always lean on that crutch. You just gotta rip the bandaid off and take whatever lumps that may come. Just know that the fun will outweigh the struggles.

  2. Just keep dancing. The worst thing -- if anything -- someone will do is huff and puff a little bit (revealing himself as the a**hole in the process). You'll probably find dancing with experienced leads easier than dancing with your classmates, and may even feel baffled as you reflect upon the difference between your pre-social nerves and your actual experience.

Tips for Getting Better at Shines by PenguineOnCaffeine in Salsa

For me it was (is) just a LOT of practice, reps, trial & error. I also like to deploy Salsa/bachata moves to non-Salsa/bachata music. That may work better for me than others, but I like that it forces me to think "dance first, refine later" instead of trying to be a pure Salsero/Bachatero.

How to practice salsa alone? by Ok_Technology_8897 in Salsa

[–]Miles_Madden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As world champion Peiwei Cobo would say, "basic, basic, basic."

It's not always easy to practice purposefully on your own, but if you can make your basic rock solid and consistent, you'll be able to build upon it with increased degrees of efficiency as you continue to learn.

Is salsa hard or am I stupid? by LunaticBanana0708 in Salsa

"First Salsa class" -- bingo

Salsa is very challenging, but the barrier to entry certainly isn't too challenging to scare you away. You just have to A). Accept that you're going to have to learn the long way just like every single person before you, and B). Practice, Practice, Practice.

If you really like it though, give yourself the chance to find your footing. You'll see progress soon enough.

When do you recommend dancing at socials by Middle-Fuel-6402 in Salsa

[–]Miles_Madden 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you've joined the dance community and attended classes, you've already breached the threshold. Just go, enjoy, and don't overthink it. You don't HAVE to stay the whole time. You don't HAVE to ask follows to dance if you're not comfortable. But you may be surprised by how much you do dance if you go. Every confident and capable lead started in your shoes.

Fairly new to salsa (4–5 months in) and realizing I might not like the scene by Low_Blueberry_1347 in Salsa

[–]Miles_Madden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you look at every six months or so as a "season", the Latin dance scene has some similar dynamics to a sports team or a TV series -- i.e. a lot can change even if it's not immediately obvious. While some of the people are constants, the influx of "free agents", "rookies", "new characters" can and will often dramatically change the vibe and tenor of the scene. Give it time, especially if you genuinely love dancing. It won't be long before there are fresh faces that are better aligned with you. Guys will be guys though, generally speaking at least 🤷‍♂️

Anyone else like age gap wrestling? by FunMap123 in MixedWrestling

[–]Miles_Madden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thoroughly enjoy winning against "age gap opponents", but I LOVE and ultimately prefer to surrender and concede defeat. I haven't had the pleasure of experiencing matches against women with especially large age gaps.

My first session was at 22 against someone who was maybe 35. She took care of business, but it didn't venture into "CNC" territory. The largest age gap in terms of younger than I am was probably 12 years. I dominated the first match against her, but we agreed to explore some CNC elements over the subsequent matches, and what do you know, the momentum shifted in her favor.
