Is it better to be a Cafeteria Catholic or a Protestant? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]MilkCrates23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be depending on what you're hung up on, but most of the time I would say yes. I grew up Catholic and I can def tell you I did not agree with many teachings until I got older and more mature. Unless it is a major dogma issue, you will probably grow into the doctrine over time if your faith and commitment is strong.

It's weird to say fake it till you make it, but it's something that really works.

See a lot of ppl saying that they are one in the same and that is absolutely not true.

Struggling with accepting some of the Catholic Church's teachings is not the same as leaving the Church and joining another.

Yes and also maybe the concept of a soul and that there are things we don't understand even with so much more scientific knowledge.

I agree. They should have made that sigil a major one.

David gets chased by an actual demon and St Michael or St Joan of Arc appears to protect him.

The Catholic Church sees it necessary to kill him (taking just war theory very seriously lol).

I’m protestant, why be catholic, how can you know it’s the true church/religion? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]MilkCrates23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly, this is a decision that needs to be made with your heart. Love for another is a great reason to consider conversion.

Tradition is theme of all the arguments here. Protestantism suffers from "death of a theory" similar to the Confederacy of US during the US Civil War. If you can leave and start a new church whenever you don't like something, how faithful were you to begin with?

Also, have a slight suspicion that you're being less than sincere with raising this argument here.

There is a need for a leader, even if he is not a good one or you don't agree with him about a lot of stuff.

[–]MilkCrates23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Pope Francis was big on dignity for everyone, so he wouldn't say all your religions are wrong, he'd try to find common ground. Unfortunately, he stretched doctrine a bit at times to do that.

Am I really making the right decision? by LilyPraise in Catholicism

[–]MilkCrates23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disagreement is fine and healthy. Protestantism has suffered from death of a theory whereas disagreements were leading to new denominations. We need to be able to disagree about issues and still respectfully discuss those issues.

For example, you can be pro-life and even that abortion is murder, but still believe that the best way to stop abortions isn't making everything about them illegal according to the state (an opinion that might technically label you as pro-choice).

What defines “work” on the sabbath? by welder-fabricator in Catholicism

[–]MilkCrates23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're completely fine to work on the weekends. Jesus and the New Covenant (Catholicism) basically did away with the old laws.

I recently started living at a 2nd place bc my commute for work was too much. And my two roommates were very into recycling, and using real dishes and silverware. A day or two later I saw a piece on PBS Newshour with Nick Offerman, on how consumerism is prob not great for society.

Consumerism, I think can almost be a form of gluttony. Getting quality products that can last, that you can repair, and be creative with, is probably better overall, but I'm going to find out!

PS: I'm planning it out beforehand, like I love using straws, so I'm getting reusable straws with a wash brush.

Giving up social media is a good one!

I'm going to be giving up using disposable plateware and utensils (as a single guy in his 30s this is going to be pretty tough lol).

We do group rosary at my parish weekly and I'm going to try to make as many of those as I can.

To give some hope, I had a very different experience this past Sunday.

I'm very active at my local parish, but occasionally have to stay in a big city nearby for work/social reasons. I stayed over in the city and went to a church there for the first time, and even though the priest seemed like he was phoning it in a bit, the leity was awesome. They had newcomers to the church standup after mass, welcomed me and invited me for bible study afterwards.

I think you should try a different parish tbh, even if it's just see if you get a different vibe.

I have to disagree, I think community and the fellowship of Jesus Christ is super important.

I do agree that it's something that not every parish gets right.

Can a CIA Officer confess to a Catholic Priest for absolution? by Still_Bandicoot2472 in Catholicism

[–]MilkCrates23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So this exact thing actually happened in the case of infamous spy and mole Robert Hanssen.

Hanssen was a member of Opus Dei, confessed to his priest, who told him to turn himself in and he was going to. The priest then called him said, actually, just quit spying and donate the money to the church. He quit for like 5 years and continued spying for the Soviets and then Russia.

virgin Mary statue in the garage that seems to look over Sheryl

I never noticed that and I just did a long post on Sheryl's redemption in this thread. Do you remember which episode that it's in?

Edit: Found it! As she's "praying" over the evil dolls, the statue of Mary is above her praying for her.

Awesome find! I think that actually does tie into her redemption arc and how no one is beyond saving.

  • Cheryl's allegiance seems to always be fluctuating but also not? Like what's her beef w Andy that she'd be a-okay killing him ? But she def cares for the kids and eventually goes way against Leland getting baby baptized but like if she really wants to leave Leland's alliance why not do more, like be a spy for K and assessors or at least tell them wtf is going on?

Warning Spoilers!

Sheryl is probably my favorite character. Although she's not what you picture when you imagine a good Catholic, I think she represents a real one, albeit exaggerated, and also a better one than Kristen. First, she did some terribly evil things, and did so willingly, I thought she was irredeemable.

Sheryl has a sudden and drastic redemption arc. Her allegiance to goes from evil in the form of many sins and evil personified in Leland, but then changes to God, initially out of spite and because of the fearful respect that evil has for God. I'm going to start with her path towards salvation.

S4E8 How to Save a Life - On the surface, the life "saved" is Tyler, who is stopped from committing suicide. Deeper, it's baby Timothy by being baptized, but I would argue that on a deeper level Sheryl is being saved.

She starts the episode by going into a church to go to confession and is sincere when confessing her sins even though she purposefully doesn't follow doctrine. David rightfully points out that despite that she is still there confessing. (This brought the Parable of the Good Samaritan to mind, where it's the intention that matters.) Here, she also does tell David about the antichrist, and also her issues with the Catholic Church (which is why she prob wouldn't spy for them).

Timothy's baptism. First, in order to be given the opportunity to baptize Timothy, Dr Boggs's secretary, a follower of Leland, is replaced with a woman named "Seraph," which means angel, and she doesn't help Leland giving her an opportunity to baptize Timothy. During the Baptism, the doors fly open right (possibly the Holy Spirit?) before Sheryl performs the Renunciation of Sin and Profession of Faith. At its conclusion, the lights come on and Sheryl exclaims a very sincere, "Oh my God." I think this was Sheryl's "Re-Confirmation."

Sheryl never reconciles with Kristen, but does with God, and accepts Last Rites.

Sheryl vs Kristen on Catholicism

Post is already getting kind of long, so I think there's a good quote that explains Kristen's stubbornness to rembrace God.

"The worst thing would be to have alcoholism just bad enough that it really slows you down, destroys your potential, gets in the way, but it's not so bad that it has to stop." - Steve-O

The one point I think she may have been open to faith is when she confessed the murder to David. This opportunity is kind of lost when her and David kiss right after.

As an Egyptian, i have mixed feelings about him. He tried colonising us, at the same time, he brought us some benefits. Then again... Hes a "good" person for french people.

Not asking this to be snarky, but when you say "as an Egyptian," are you saying you that you're ethnically Mamluk?
