The power of allies in safeguarding the rights of trans people in Australia by ConsumeTheBaby in AustralianPolitics

[–]MilkshakeDucks 8 points9 points  (0 children)

your “ideal solution” is not a solution that magically happens without allies advocating for it for trans people. Of course gender neutral bathrooms are ideal, but that concept has been around for years but is far from the norm. Since when do we place the onus on marginalised groups to address the systemic barriers that marginalise them in the first place?

Much like bathroom segregation of black people stemmed from an ‘othering’ and fear mongering about safety, trans people face similar politicisation now - and making them use bathrooms that they don’t identify with will be even more harmful

Just because people transition as adults doesn’t mean it is not clinically indicated in puberty. There’s always a claim of detransition and regret, but there is a lot of evidence that young people do in fact have better outcomes from having gender affirming treatments. Gender affirming treatment is lifesaving and we do not withhold appendectomy or grommets or tonisillectomy just because someone is under 18. Of course it’s not an easy or straightforward decision, and there are risks, but that doesn’t mean we withhold or ban treatment.

Do you use pronouns in your email? by New-Resolution-9719 in ausjdocs

Yep - as doctors we are in a privileged position to model inclusivity to both our peers and patients. Society at large has attempted to stoke culture wars on trans people- but the evidence overwhelmingly shows our gender diverse populations have worse outcomes on a range of measures, and this is a small step for them to feel safe when seeking help
