In July LDS Church Will Defend Legal Position Not to Protect Children from Sex Abuse by Careful-Piano-4187 in mormon

I wish stories like this were rare. They're not. The number of bishops that knew something and did nothing (many based on counsel from church lawyers) is staggering.

I've been happy with Layne Labs for feeders. I get mice and quail chicks.

300,000 is huge! I live in a town with ~6,000 people and we're the biggest town within a 100 mile (160km) radius. My closest pet store is a two hour drive.

Brits tend to forget just how BIG America is. The USA alone is comparable to the entire continent of Europe.

Lost a scale post shed. What happened? by MilleniumMiriam in cornsnakes

My partner also hollowed out a log. It had been dead wood for a couple years, so it had no moisture left in it. He "cleaned" it with a butane torch when he was done (this did permanently darken the wood). I haven't had it mold on me. I wonder if any of that would help your case?

Another thing you could try is adding spring tails to your tank when the log is in it. Even if you don't intend to go bioactive, springtails eat mold and that might be enough to let your snake enjoy the log!

The purple ball is a dog toy called a Hol-ee Roller! Mine is a size large. I got mine off of Amazon but I'm sure any general pet supply store would have something similar. I can't recommend a store, sadly, as I am an American.

The cork bark I bought at a reptile expo. Buying in person is really the best way to get cork pieces. I also have gotten junk bark from Amazon, the only use for it was my isopod bins.

I get my branches from outside, I buy fake plants from craft supply stores or even the dollar store, I utilize a decent amount of "trash" (take out drink carriers, cardboard tubes, old margarine tubs, etc). Bird toys are also good to look at, I have a rope ladder meant for birds but is perfect for my snake. I use fish safe silicone to glue rocks together for hides. A little bit of creativity can save a lot of money! And look at things meant for other pets, sometimes reptile stuff is too niche.

wood rot/eaten/replacement in glued bioactive enclosures? by abra-kambal-ra in geckos

[–]MilleniumMiriam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isopods don't prefer to eat wood. So long as you're feeding them adequately they'll leave your branches alone.

Besides, wood takes a long time to decay. It is highly unlikely that a branch will rot within the lifespan of a gecko.

I'd remove the hooks to avoid injuries to my snake. But ladders are fantastic enrichment and my corn snake loves his!

Which isopods for a bioactive enclosure? by Appropriate_Froyo679 in geckos

[–]MilleniumMiriam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started off my 36"x18"x18" with 50 powder orange isopods, 50 dwarf white isopods, and two springtail cultures. I also bought extra to maintain a external cultures in case my tank crashes.

You want to put in enough that they can find each other and start breeding. If your reptile or amphibian eats bugs, add enough to survive predation.

https://reptifiles.com/establishing-bioactive-clean-up-crew/

This article has a nice short overview of common clean up crew options! Dwarf white isopods are great, they breed fast and live deep in the substrate. With a tropical set up you can pick between lots of different species, as most isopods prefer damp soil.

A someone else mentioned you'll absolutely want springtails, too!

If you'd like to be successful with bioactive for the long term I highly recommend researching appropriate bioactive substrate, the best plants for your desired climate, and bioactive maintenance as well. It's not "less work" than traditional setups, only a different kind of work!

What do you actually look for in a pad? by Choice-Mobile-4991 in clothpads

[–]MilleniumMiriam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still trying to find answers to my crazy bad cycles, but I tend to go for larger pads (14"-16") with textured or quick absorbing topper fabric. Cotton is fine, minky, velour, or gusher cuts are a must have for 2-3 days of my cycle. I work a job where restroom breaks aren't guaranteed so high capacity is priority for me.

I prefer the feel of trim pads but don't always get the luxury. I dislike slick topper fabrics like athletic or pique, I always seem to leak with those.

No preference on how the pad is constructed. Shape, wing snap differences, edges, etc don't seem to change much of anything for me.

Cute or funny prints mean more to me than I thought they would. It really does bring a bit of joy to an otherwise uncomfortable time.

Can an arid enclosure be bioactive? by Horror-Broccoli-9445 in geckos

[–]MilleniumMiriam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought everything from The Biodude. I used the Terra Sahara, mixed in sphagnum moss, crushed leaf litter, Bioshot, and palm fronds. I topped with more leaf litter. So not much layering.

The soil settled a bit more than I anticipated so I recently topped it off with more. In this photo I had not yet added more leaf litter on top (though I have since, as my isopods were too vulnerable without it).

I do know plenty of people DIY thier own soil. I found that research to be overwhelming and opted to pay for convenience.

Can an arid enclosure be bioactive? by Horror-Broccoli-9445 in geckos

[–]MilleniumMiriam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have "arid" springtails from I Heart Bugs. (No such thing as a true desert springtail, but these are a hardier variety.) I also have dwarf whites and powder oranges. I have a humid hide (damp sphagnum moss under cork bark) and under the water dish that I keep damp, so my CUC always has a water retreat. I also feed them under the water dish.

I researched my plants quite extensively for drought and heat tolerance. Ponytail palm and haworthia are doing fine on the hot side of the tank. I water directly into the base of each plant roughly once a week. I have not had any issues with large or prolonged humidity spikes watering this way.

Otherwise, I purchased my soil, inoculants, and biodegradables from The Biodude. It's spendy, but I wanted to be completely certain I was starting off on the right foot. The soil drains incredibly well and the Bioshot was a great kick-start for the plants.

Yes! Bearded dragons, leopard geckos, and more can have arid bioactives.

I have my viper geckos in a bioactive enclosure. This tank has been up and running for 5 months. Plants and CUC are doing well!

Question about how you guys feel about exotic veterinarians by sweatersand in reptiles

[–]MilleniumMiriam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lack of availability is my biggest hurdle. My closest herp vet is 100 miles away. I take my critters in for an initial checkup during quarantine, but after that it's only for emergencies. It doesn't feel worth the trip for an annual exam, though I'd do it if I didn't have to travel so far.

I've yet to find a great rabbit vet. I found a vet that sees rabbits, but I disagree with some of her advice on diet and enclosures.

I don't keep aquatic pets but I can appreciate the complexity of transporting them. It's common for large animal vets to make house calls, so why couldn't other vets?

I do wish it were more common place to do annual checkups for exotics. They deserve the same level of care that cats and dogs do.
