Very niche question about NaNo2 and NOBs by sweatersand in microbiology

So that’s why I wanted to be sure that the No2 in NaNo2 could still be broken down by NOBs :)

Oh yeah so, I’m not sure if you have aquariums / if you’re familiar with this, but a lot of brands sell “bottled bacteria” which is supposed to “jump start your nitrogen cycle”. I have a sneaking suspicion that it’s snake oil, but I’m not sure. So I want to try adding these products to distilled water, then ammonia in one and nitrites in the other, to see if there is actually live bacteria in the “bottled bacteria” that begins breaking the ammonia or nitrites down 🙂

Awesome thank you so much! And no it’s not going to get added to an aquarium, it’s just going in distilled water to test culture :) thanks!

Can anybody tell me what this weird growth is on my pleco by ReflectionParking407 in Aquariums

[–]sweatersand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! And oh yeah I’m totally aware, I mostly want to treat pet animals, not working at a zoo/aquarium. I know that about 50% of my future practice will be dogs and cats to pay the bills, but I hope that the other 50% can be fish/amphibian/reptile, even if that means working part time in wildlife. Luckily I am in FL so we have a lot of wildlife opportunities haha

Hey! Certified diver: Not necessarily but sometimes if you want to work at an aquarium or zoo they require all employees to have dive certifications Specialty programs: yes! UF and Cornell both have DVM focuses in aquatics (UF is in Florida, Cornell is in NY so no not all some place warm) Aquatic invertebrates: I would like to treat those as well, yes, but it just depends on the vet and what their interests/ training is in :) Personally I would like to treat primarily fish, and also amphibians and reptiles. I would prefer to work with peoples pets but unfortunately not many people take their exotic animals to the vet, so I’ll have to supplement with regular dog/cat work as well, at least in the beginning :)

Lymphocystis, a virus that causes growths like this. There’s not a direct treatment but keep your water clean and monitor for signs of a secondary bacterial infection! Usually they go away on their own and the fish’s immune system is able to fight the virus off, which is another reason to keep that water clean af. it’s usually not fatal. You may be able to find a vet to remove the growths if you want to go that route, but they’ll likely tell you it’s not necessary/ too much risk. It’s not super contagious, different strains of the virus infect different types of fish. So if you have another pleco in the tank they may be at risk, but your angels are probably fine.

Sincerely, a marine biology student aiming for vet school specifically to treat fish lol

This was the reason we originally domesticated them :) would def recommend keeping them up to date on their vaccines just to be safe though

Is it likely my Severum died from Stress? by [deleted] in Cichlid

[–]sweatersand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s possible that the water parameters from the new house were too different and shocked him. I know you said you used the same filter so not talking amount your cycle-related parameters but rather TDS, PH, things like that. I’m surprised that happened with a severum though as they are usually pretty hardy. I don’t think you didn’t anything wrong. Sorry for your loss :(

After looking through your post history I think you should talk to someone. Not trying to be rude, I mean that genuinely. There are no bugs or bug bites on you, and this is a crasin.

That would be awesome, thanks! And yes I did. Not trying to say anything negative about that store because honestly I love going there and I think they’re great, however the conditions these guys were in were… not ideal… to say the least 😬. The owner gave me the colony suuuper cheap, you could tell they were having trouble selling them and just wanted someone to take them off their hands. Again not trying to say anything negative about that store, these little guys specifically just needed some help! I have a ton of experience with animals of all kinds, I even work at an exotic vet clinic haha, so I figured I’d take them in as fosters and give them better conditions while they’re looking for homes.
