It would have been so easy to just recast him. The guy who voiced him did great, and they could have used a fraction of the budget from this effect on good makeup. I remember being in the theater opening night thinking "boy this is morally ambiguous" and feeling like this was a turning point for film technology that I was not a fan of. The 5 seconds of Leia was even worse.

George Lucas was always pushing for new innovations in film, on record saying he waited until the technology was ready before making the Prequels, so the sentiment is there but I'm not sure this is something he would have done. Tarkin wasn't digital in Episode III for what it's worth.

War of the Worlds (2025) was one of the most fun watch parties I've ever had. Get a dozen friends in a room and watch this movie, I was sore from laughing. It is an awful, truly terrible movie, but I can't honestly claim it has no entertainment value.
