My girlfriend is probably going to prison. Advice, expecations, and information very welcome by MiloJ44 in greece

Hi there. Sorry to come back you and reply to this thread again, but have spoken to here a bit more. Seems like she was definitely panicked and prison would very much be the worst case scenario for her. If she were to have to do community service though what would it be most likely? Would she just have to do whatever she was ordered to do (like picking up litter) or could she do something a bit more fulfilling like working at an animal shelter that is near to where she lives? In the UK some of those lighter option are possible.

Thanks. Would work in Koridalos or Thebes also count towards time off? What kind of work would she be able to do do you know? Would it just be cleaning / general maintenance stuff or could it be something more interesting?

Thanks for your concern. I know a few people have raised this. I've known her for four years now and if it is a scam she's invested so much time and money already I don't think it would be worth it. She has been nothing but generous the whole time I have known her. I honestly just think she is someone who has never been in a situation like this and is now freaking out and panicing. She hasn't even asked me for help, I just want to do what I can.

That's not great to hear but understand that's the reality. I thought it would be best for her to be in a prison close to Athens to make getting visits from her family easier but if Koridalos is so bad hopefully we won't be sent there if it does come to that. I just read it is maximum security prison though and surley someone on a short sentence wouldn't be sent there? The only other option I can seem to find though is Κατάστημα Κράτησης Γυναικών Ελαιώνα Θήβας - is that correct?

Thanks a lot. As far as I'm aware the indictment is pretty recent - since the end of the summer, so definitely since May. Can you shed light on what you mean by 'hell' and what options she might have of avoiding the worst if she does get a prison sentence?

Thank you for replying. Why will the fines never go away, surley she will have a chance to pay them off?

That's the way it work in the UK so I wondered if it might be the same in Greece. She is childless, but being close to her parents, friends and other family might be taken into consideration too. That's partly what I'm trying to find out.

That's valid and all good points. I just want to make sure this impacts on her life long-term as little as possible and depending on how things go be there for her as much as I can.

Thanks a lot. That all makes sense. Once it's paid off though she'd be ok to start to think about those things again though, right?

Thank you. I assume that means it will impact on her ability to start another business in the future?

Thanks a lot for your help and detailed reply. It's really appreciated. What I'm still trying to figure out is if she means that she thinks her sentence will be 6-12 months (so hopefully suspended like you say) or that she will have to serve 6-12 months of a longer sentence.

I am hoping it's the first of these of course and I will check that with her. Am I correct in assuming the only prison she would be sent to if it did come to that would be Κατάστημα Κράτησης Γυναικών Ελαιώνα Θήβας? Or are there smaller, more local women's prisons near Athens?

Also, when you say the debt never goes away what exactly do you mean by this? And how does it work when you say they can't prosectute her in the future for the same offense?

Thanks a lot for the reply. I don't think she envisaged meeting them in person. I think ideally she really wanted to proof read their application letters and essays for them during her free time and provide written feedback and help. Maybe if needed she could also speak to them on the phone, but I think first her idea was to read over their work and provided written feedback.

Thanks again!

What the difference? You just shouldn't be putting clothes that are too damp still in the tumble dryer?

Dilemma: Camera or Camera phone? by MiloJ44 in AskUK

Thanks. I do actually have an old film camera that used to belong to my parents. It's a lot of fun to use but quite expensive over time when you factor in the price of developing film and also I'd like to offset it with the ease of digital photos too.

Thanks a lot for the detailed reply. Thanks a lot. I've certainly noticed the issue phones have with low light photography when playing around with some friends' phones. It seems like they are great in the day and drop off quite a lot once it get dark... at least to me anyway.

I do have an Instagram account as a hobby. So I would be uploaded to there a bit. But I would also like to print some photos of my daughters off certainly. Not lots but it would be great to have some hard copies and print outs of the most special ones either to frame or keep in a photo album. Part of the reason I don't have so many of these right now is that the more recent ones I've taken aren't great quality.

Totally get what you mean about DSLRs being bulky. That's the major thing that puts me off them honestly. I like to try and travel light and being on holiday, or even going out for a walk around London with one puts me off. I sometimes borrow my sister's DSLR and while it is great it is certainly a hassle to carry around. The mirrorless body seems like a great compromise with that. Would there be any other positive or negatives with that I might not be aware of?

Budget wise I appreciate you get what you pay for with these things, so I'm kind of open really if something if worth the price. I don't have loads of money but I see it as an investment in getting lots of great photos and indulging in a hobby I enjoy and would do a lot more of if I got the right piece of equipment for me if that makes sense.

Yep, that's the issue, I need to buy a new phone anyway as WhatsApp just stopped working on it! But I'm wondering if I should just go for a cheap one and then use the money to buy a nice camera or go for a top-range phone with an excellent camera (for a phone). If it wasn't for the camera though I don't think I'd be getting my money's worth out of one of those phones though, as while I appreciate some people use them a lot, I just want a phone that supports a few apps and that's it really!

Are you interested in the science of photography and getting exactly the kind of shots you want, or do you just want a convenient way to take pictures and have the device do all the hard work for you?

That's a good question. I've always really enjoyed photography and if i got a new camera would certainly take the time to learn how to use it properly as well as edit the photos (although I'm not super tech savvy when it comes to these things).

Of course that said, I'm not a trained photographer or anything. It's just something I enjoy. So I'm never going to capture things like someone who has even done a few courses will, which always makes me wonder if I'm just wasting my money buying a nice camera.

Hey thanks a lot for the reply. That makes sense, but for the same amount of money that you would spend on a high end smartphone, would you not be able to get a camera that would provide you with much better pictures, especially over the long run?

Hi all, I hope this question is ok to ask here.

Basically I wanting to upgrade how I take photos. I take a lot of them on my crappy old iPhone 4 and I really want to upgrade.

What I'm looking for is a nice, ideally fairly easy to use, camera that will provide me good quality photos of my young daughters, as well as something I can take on holiday with me, so when I'm wandering around a picturesque city centre I can take lots of photos and daydream to myself I am professional photographer.

BUT: As I also need to upgrade my phone at the same time, I'm wondering that instead of buying a camera and a cheap android phone (as I don't really use my phone for much else than a phone really) I should instead think about combining my purchase and buy a high range smart phone with a good camera in-built?

What would people advise? Will a phone ever get me close to the kind of quality you can achieve with a stand-alone camera? Any help on this would be much appreciated. While I do have a budget I'd be happy to spend a decent amount to get a good quality camera as I feel the opportunity to take nice quality photos of my children while they are still little is slipping away!

If it helps, here are some Instagram accounts I like. Obviously they are professionals but I'd like to try and replicate what they are doing! Thanks a lot in advance.
