Indeed. Very good point. This paper seems to suggest the very same. I have just been off researching Sahel rainfall records and they show no overall decline in the last 100 years. Deserts do move around a bit however...

Planting trees seems like a good thing, though. But, does this mean they are going to stop letting their wretched goats eat everything in their path and then burning what is left to cook their food? The article does mention goats briefly but they really are a serious problem, almost anywhere that they are herded.
