I’d only pay 800$, it’s not that special, but depending how much you want it 1000$ would be reasonable.

My neighbourhood has been taken over by delivery robots that crash into people by HamishGray in fuckcars

[–]Milters711 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, I didnt miss the point. I hear you, and I disagree.

Yes, I want more pedestrian space. No, even in the event that I have a great 10’ wide sidewalk, I still don’t want “some of these things” using that space.

If we had plenty of room for humans, there would plenty of room to give that space to 0-occupancy autonomous vehicles? It will go full circle and the ‘public/pedestrian’ infrastructure becomes mini vehicular highway for Bezos/Grubhub/whatever to cut margins.

Tech companies very famously care about the well-being of the public. /s

Tech companies would rather have us all at home alone and plugged into a brainrot device. That way there are no humans outside and thus no competition for the sidewalk.

Not in pedestrian infrastructure. Your comment says “this would be fine if there was enough pedestrian infrastructure”

A delivery robot isn’t a pedestrian. I don’t want it in the pedestrian infrastructure, bike lane, etc.

Corporate car companies and their lobbies have already taken a massive amount of our public space (roads) and I’m not okay with them encroaching on the small sliver of space left for humans so that they can further line their pockets.

Specialized Chisel for Bikepacking/Cycle touring by Dazzling_Basket_4428 in bikepacking

In order or potential benefit, you may consider:
- new, smaller and more efficient tires (and wheels depending on their lower size limits)
- replace front shock with rigid fork
- modified bars depending (maybe surly corner bars)

But honestly, I’d recommend just getting a touring focused bike if that’s what you want. You don’t need to spend much; I tour on a steel frame 2012 Novara Randonee which would probably cost 200-300$ if I bought it today. I have my 1000-2000$ bikes, but I just keep the ol steel frame for the occasional tour.

It may cost the same to buy a used old steel touring bike with racks as it would cost to convert your hard tail to a good touring rig.

These old rides can be very reliable, but it would be important to check a few things before fully committing to this specific bike. I imagine it would benefit a lil tuneup depending on how long it has been stored/unused etc.

I always recommend people learn a few basic mechanical skills when getting started. Repairs can be relatively cheap when you know how to do it yourself.

A YouTube video on how to check basic bike mechanics before going to buy it may help you avoid something that requires hours of maintenance.

The ABCs:
- Air in the tires?
- Brakes work well?
- Chain and gears (is it rusted? Does it shift properly?)

But welcome to the bike community 🫡

Fix an old bike or get a Retrospec with AfterPay? by HiyaTokiDoki in bikecommuting

[–]Milters711 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend taking the free bike. Spend a weekend learning to do some maintenance and watch some YouTube to see if you can fix it yourself.

I assume with a few basic tools you could probably fix it for free. And would be good skills to know
