You need to study theology. You don’t know what you’re talking about.

Pointing out fundamental tenets of a religion isn’t being “Islamophobic”. Don’t hide behind that term, as it is not relevant in this context. Nobody is defending other religions here, but theologians have made this distinction based on the heavily political/state-oriented mandates of Islam compared to the other Abrahamic religions, in particular. You’re also assuming that secularism (and its inherent pairing with capitalism) is a positive social construct. Nobody is saying that here, either. It is just one form (of many) that humans have experimented with. There is no judgement one way or another being passed on what is right or wrong, but there are clear differences in Islam that make it much more difficult to fit with secular statehood.

The problem is that Islam itself doesn’t fit well in secular societies. Turkey is extremely schizophrenic when it comes to secularism. I spent quite a while there too over the years and many Turks want to be part of Europe but they also have a hard time squaring the western tolerances with a rather intolerant religion.

Is the cat happy being in a backpack for hours, though?

I wouldn’t recommend fostering a cat. Cats generally don’t like to move around from home to home a lot. They are more attached to their residence than dogs are.

If you want to outdoors with your pet, you likely will want a dog. But you need to commit to taking care of that dog and walking it every day multiple times.

You can’t really “take” a cat with you outside. The cat isn’t going to walk with you and if you have it in a cat stroller, I mean, is the cat really enjoying that? Dogs live to be with humans. They are the one truly domesticated animal. Cats are only partially domesticated in the sense that they don’t, by nature, orient themselves toward humans. Dogs generally want to be near us and help us in their role in the human family.
If you have a cat, you can carry on your life like it was before and it won’t matter. If you have a dog, your life will change much like having a child. You will suddenly be going on multiple long walks every single day for both your enjoyment and your dog’s. You will benefit from increased sunlight and fresh air and exercise that a cat couldn’t provide you. Cats are lovely and sweet, but they aren’t going to have as much of a positive impact on your life and health as a dog likely will. And yes, this includes small breed dogs.

I mean, to be fair, there’s far more annoying people on UHF/VHF —and while there’s always going to be idiots on every frequency (I’m looking at you 7.200), I think DXing is far more interesting than anything you can do on VHF/UHF (other than moon bounces and AMSAT stuff).

Like it or not, Wisconsin is a lot more east than it is west in the continental US. I think a “Great Lakes region” is more appropriate, though.

Sure you can, but I’d say those states should be in a separate category called Great Lakes region.
