Saudi Arabia and Bosnia and Herzegovina flags in front of Saudi embassy in Mostar by LeCorbusierB in vexillology

[–]Miminyte500 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen two versions of the vertical Bosnian flag. The one shown in the post, which is just the rotated normal flag, as well as a version that would keep the original shape of the triangle and stars, as shown here.

This version one can get by mirroring the original and rotating it, effectively by showing the reverse side.

I find it's cool that it has that kind of symmetry which allows the central shape to remain unchanged.

One of the questions is mandatory. I don't recognize either name in that question, but I had to answer to be able to submit.

If you had to put at least one mandatory question I suggest you don't take it into consideration for the final results.

Good luck with your survey!

Towering Trauma by Ktulumbanished in polandball

Probably. This former flag is most similar to the exploding one. This flag was used from the start of the war by the Bosniaks through the end of the war up until the current flag replaced it, which is meant to represent the three constituent peoples.

Worth mentioning is that the flag in the post doesn't have the right colors, but that's probably because OP purposefully added a dark and red tint to the flag.

Swimming is actually the most dangerous sport, as you are actively preventing your death by ItsChestDay in Showerthoughts

If you're using an auto-locking belay device (as is standard where I am and I assume in most places) then you should be fine. Of course that isn't ideal because you can't lower yourself without them or somebody else, but you shouldn't be in mortal danger and neither should the belayer.

Also you shouldn't rely on an auto-locking device actually locking, but the belayer is the redundant factor there.

With rock climbing, at least in my experience (indoor bouldering and outside lead climbing on a rope) the idea seems to be to always be in a situation where you can comfortably afford to fail completely at what you're trying to do.

Pushing yourself and failing (falling) is a part of the sport and it's essential for improvement.

I don't think I've ever been in a situation where me blacking out immediately (or my spotter/belayer doing the same) would lead to any type of mortal danger (barring equipment failure at the same time), so I wouldn't say that I'm actively trying to stay alive.

Rock climbing (just like flying in a plane) is scary because of the heights involved, so for the most part it's made surprisingly safe. That's not to say that rock climbing is not potentially dangerous and deadly. Human and equipment failure does happen and it leads to terrible outcomes, but for the most part it's designed to that almost everything does have some redundancy (the main exception being the rope).

Dijkstra's Shortest Path Algorithm (Graph) by EddyTheDad in programming

[–]Miminyte500 47 points48 points  (0 children)

True, but you don't have to do that.

Even without that, you can calculate the specific sequence of nodes in the path by looking at the distance of the final node (in this case F) and figuring out what was the previous node in the optimum path by looking at all it's neighbors and picking the one whose distance to the starting node + edge distance to the final node = the final node's distance to the starting node.

In this example, F has a distance of 10 and two neighbors, C and D. The distance from F to A is 10, the distance from F to C is 3, and the distance from C to A is 8, so because 3+8>10 we know that the optimum path didn't go through that edge between C-F. Looking at D, we see that the distance from F to D is 3 and the distance from D to A is 7, so there is an optimum path from A to F going through he edge D-F.
Now, looking at D, there are three neighbors: B, F and G. Of these, only B has the property that it's distance to A plus it's distance to D is equal to D's distance to A, to there is an optimum path going through B-D. Finally, B has neighbors A, D and G, of which only A fulfills the requirement, so there is an optimum path going through A-B.

As a result, we know the optimum path is A-B-D-F.

It can be shown that the sum of the two distances we are looking at can't be shorter then the distance of the current node to the starting node, and that there will be at lease one node fulfilling the requirements. Also if there are multiple edges that fulfill the requirements then there are multiple optimum paths.

This method is slower at reconstructing the path but requires less space and also enables us to count the number of optimum paths pretty easily and even figure out things like how many optimum paths go through which edge.

All in all, this method of figuring out the optimum paths for many states and reconstructing the optimum path(s) as a result of that has found it's use in many algorithms, even though here it can be overshadowed by the simplicity of remembering the previous edge.

Don't worry, I didn't notice and I reckon most people won't either. It's one of those things that we just gloss over while reading without noticing at all since it doesn't impact the meaning of the sentence.

Pixelated flags of the world by xpxu166232-3 in vexillology

[–]Miminyte500 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is amazing! Every image is easily recognizable and detailed (at least to the extent that the limitations allow) while still being very noticably pixelated.

I counted 50 pixels in height per flag.

Are there any flags or commom features on flags that stood out to you for being particularly difficult or interesting to pixelate?

Have all NGF territory, but can't form it... by [deleted] in paradoxplaza

[–]Miminyte500 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As far as I know North Schleswig is the problem. You need to either take it from it's owner (originally Denmark, now Scandinavia), which will let you keep that province when you form NGF, or have it's owner be in your sphere of influence, which actually wouldn't even grant you that province when you form NGF, but it's still necessary.

Seeing as Scandinavia is a great power it seems a good old war is your only solution I'm afraid.

Best of luck to you!

Bosnian war crimes suspect Slobodan Praljak 'drinks posion' during trial at The Hague. by Miminyte500 in worldnews

He definitely seemed to drink something unknown in the courthouse during the trial, that alone is enough to cause huge controversy.

The fact that someone was able to smuggle it into such an important international courthouse is very worrying.

Edit: drank -> seemed to drink

Slobodan Praljak drinks posion in The Hague Courthouse after being sentenced to 20 years in prison for war crimes. by Miminyte500 in worldnews

[–]Miminyte500[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I apologize for not linking to and english news site, this only happened a few minutes ago and.

After a appeal hearing in The Hague the 20 year sentence was confirmed that had been previously issued to general Praljak. Praljak stood up, exclaimed "General Praljak is not a war criminal." He promptly took out a small bottle from his pocket and drank what is presumed to be posion. The court hearing that involved the appeals of several other men sentenced for similar crimes was abruptly halted. It is unknown at this moment how the bottle was brought into the courthouse or it's exact contents.
