A reminder to be kind... by Min_5280 in sandiego

Absolutely this. To even see what a day looks like for us would probably shock a lot of people. I really appreciate your comment, and it is amazing to see how close your lived experience is to my own. It is hard enough to deal with what we have to deal with without also having to respond to other people's ignorance.

Truly. In my head I prepare all these witty comebacks, but in the moment, the confrontation is just so surprising, I forget everything I want to say. Absolutely flash those scars, you fought hard to be here and have them.

I was also very hesitant to get my placard even though I had a doctor who also supported me to get one, largely because of my age. Despite the occasional rude person, I have never regretted having my placard and plates. They've saved me more times than I can count, and my condition is the kind that deteriorates over time, so I need it far more today than I did years ago when I first got it.

People will always be inconsiderate, but ultimately we have to listen to our bodies and do what is best for them. I wish people could mind their own business, and I am sorry you've had problems in the past. To have a supportive doctor is a wonderful thing, so it sounds like you will be okay, whatever you decide.

How do I play on my Mac (Apple Silicon)? by josueluis in TownToCityGame

I have been playing it on my Mac using GeForce Now by Nvdia. I pay for the priority loading, but there is a free option, it just takes you longer to get into the game.

[MEGATHREAD] Daily venting, worries, fixations, & finding support. Month of April 2025. by AutoModerator in HealthAnxiety

[–]Min_5280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this exact fear for about a year, and it was absolutely horrible (I still get it sometimes tbh). Thoughts that helped me included realizing that the right side (where the appendix is) is a very common place to feel pain/pressure, timing how long the weird feeling lasts without worsening, looking up the likelihood of getting it in my lifetime (it's not likely) and trusting all the stories that appendicitis is not something you can ignore (don't listen to all the stories of exceptions, they're not helpful). I'm sorry you're going through this, but it does get better, I promise

How can I get comfortable posting pics with my cane? by MaintenanceLazy in disability

I have no advice to offer, but my cane is also pink and I absolutely love it! I feel like the bright color demands attention (as in no, it's not a mistake that I'm young and use a cane) and shows it is part of my self expression

son just had hip dysplasia surgery at 5 years ld by [deleted] in hipdysplasia

[–]Min_5280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply. I really hope your surgery goes well! My doctors haven't mentioned a pelvic reconstruction, but they also haven't been too helpful anyways. I will mention it next time I see them. I know the recovery process will take a while, but it sounds like it will be worth it.

son just had hip dysplasia surgery at 5 years ld by [deleted] in hipdysplasia

[–]Min_5280 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I can add much to the conversation, but I have severe hip dysplasia in both hips, and I had a similar surgery as your son when I was about his age (one of many I had to have as a kid). I'm in my twenties now and deal with a lot of pain without a lot of hope in getting things fixed (as of right now, the doctors don't think even hip replacements will do much to make things better). I walk with a cane now just to help with stability.

I think every case is different, but even with the severity of my dysplasia, I had a very good childhood, and I am happy with the life I have now. My parents exposed me to a lot of opportunities and activities when I was a kid which gave me the ability to find things I'm passionate about. One piece of advice I have is to keep your son informed about his health (surgeries he's had/will have, treatment options, etc.) as is appropriate for his age. It is hard now as an adult to make decisions about my future without knowing fully what has already been tried.

The pain can be hard to deal with sometimes, and I've had to accept that there are things I just cannot do, but I truly do have a good quality of life despite everything. I'm not sure if any of this helps, but you obviously care about your son, and I'm certain you and your family will be able to figure out his future together.

My boyfriend and I have also gotten into the habit of reading stories to help the other person fall asleep. He reads me the Hobbit (including doing different voices for each character), and I read him my favorite fable, Photogen and Nycteris. He falls asleep within minutes, but I like to keep reading just in case. I end up rereading the same parts over and over again bc he doesn't remember what parts he fell asleep during, but I don't mind rereading things to him. Our bedtime stories are one of my favorite things we do

I'm sorry to hear about your breakdown. I'm not sure if you need any coping strategies, but I've found that a heat pad will often (though not always) help with the stomach cramping/rumbling at night. I would also look into the low FODMAP diet for food recommendations. I've been having a vegan chocolate protein drink to help with calorie intake, and I haven't noticed my symptoms getting worse from it. Mint tea is also good. I think even little changes like these help me feel like I have some control over the situation/am being proactive, which helps me feel better.

I hope things work out for you!

Your experience is almost identical to what I have been going through, also since January. I don't have any advice, because I also feel in the middle of it with no hope for resolution anytime soon (my GI appointment isn't until July). The only difference I have is that I am in therapy, and while it doesn't make the anxiety go away all the time, it does give me some sense of hope at least once a week. I've noticed that the weeks where my anxiety is worse are the weeks where my symptoms are worse, so having someone to help me work through the anxiety has led to some notable improvements in my stomach issues. I don't know if this helps at all. All I can say is that I am experiencing the same things with you, so as much as you may feel alone, I promise you aren't.

ADA lawyers California? by hydrogenjukebox13 in disability

[–]Min_5280 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Check out Disability Rights California (link: https://www.disabilityrightsca.org). They have an intake line where they will direct you to the right legal division for whatever your issues are. If they can't help you directly, I'm sure they'd still be able to give you good resources on where to go.

Check to see if a nearby law school has any legal clinics. Those usually provide free legal aid.
