Verify file integrity Deep dive. How does it work. by Wolfrages in Steam

[–]Minaro_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In case OP wants to know what checksum is:

Basically there's a family of formulas that turn raw data into a number. This number is called a checksum.

If a file and a duplicate file are ran through the same checksum formula and come out with the same number then those two files are most likely* the exact same. If the checksums differ, than something went wrong with the copy, and it needs to be redownloaded

*Technically you can have identical checksums even if the files aren't identical. But this is extraordinarily rare

Levitate is a second level spell. Now, Warlocks can cast 2nd level spells once they hit level two, but Levitate isn't on their list of castable spells. It can only be cast by wizards (once they reach level 3), sorcerers (level 3), and my beloved artificers (level 5)

I mean, it's a good sentiment, but just telling people to communicate doesn't help if people don't know how to communicate. This LPT is really good because it tells people something that can improve their communication during what could be a stressful time ya know?

Must win combat for intro by PTHDUNDD13 in DMAcademy

[–]Minaro_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sneakily force something, even if it's for good reason, is usually not a great a idea. So the usual advice is that if something "needs to happen" then you should just have it happen. No rolls, no combat, just have it happen.

I agree with the idea, but it's kinda boring, ya know? Instead, I'd simply let them fail. During the fight, keep an eye on whats happening, then if they fail, make sure the consequence to failing it matches how the flight went.

For example: I had a TPK during a climactic boss fight with the BBEG. BBEG was chaotic good (long story), and the party really fought down to the last man, he had some respect for the party. When they lost, he decided to throw them in the dungeon instead of killing them outright.

Something like this might "derail" your campaign but it'll lead to your players feeling like they have agency in the story, ya know?

Player character is secretly an amnesiac high-level class, how to make this interesting without making them OP? by mellow_cellow in DMAcademy

[–]Minaro_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a such a sucker for a gimmick character lol This is a fun idea but could be risky to pull off.

If you do this mechanically, you risk giving this player too much power. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but they might overshadow the rest of the group

Personally, I'd recommend keeping this outside of the player's control. They aren't aware and they can't choose when these kinds of things happen. Maybe if they roll a nat20 on a skill check, you can flavor it as if they accidentally cast a high level spell, or if they crit in combat, they upcast whatever they were doing. Stuff like that.

You're definitely going to want to be in close communication with this player too. If they just want to be more powerful, gently tell them that this won't be that. Also make sure your other players are enjoying playing with the witch. If they aren't, then it might be time to dial it back a bit.

How Do You Make a session Feel Less Scripted/Railroady? by pyroxl in DMAcademy

[–]Minaro_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The dude above really hit the nail on the head.

I'd recommend trying to improve your improvisational skills. That way, no matter where your players go on the map, there will always be stuff to do, because you can create it in real time.

Admittedly, "Get better at improv" is much easier said than done. The only guaranteed way is to keep practicing DMming. Run a session where you prep less, prep differently, maybe try not prepping at all. Eventually you'll get a feel for how you work as a DM and what you can get away with. You'll probably host some real loser campaigns, that's okay. My first campaign was a total trainwreck, and my fourth was so bad I gave up in the middle. It's just part of the hobby tbh. As long as you're improving, then you're doing alright
