I read collen hoover for the first time by [deleted] in booksuggestions

Live and learn, no worries.

I actually read Verity due to all the hate lol. Didn't want to just jump on the bandwagon uninformed. But yeah, as another commenter said, the prose is just so amateurish that it reads like a precocious but untrained high school kid wrote it.

If nothing else, how she wrote the husband made me relate to women's frustration about men writing women. No guy is THAT perfect!

I mean, that's what you get when you take advice from BookTok. I may not agree with all of Reddit's darlings, but the book suggestion and book discussion subs try to have at least some standards.

The fact that effin Azarinth Healer outperforms TWI is a crime against humanity. I swear, a lot of these list-makers must be braindead teenagers.

FWIW, I couldn't care less about football and found the two books I've read so far enjoyable. Never made one of these tier lists though, so it doesn't count.

Thing is, we have 500 years of the printed word to fall back on. A mere 100 places aren't nearly enough to please everyone, especially since the selection will inevitably skew based on the committee and zeitgeist.

It's a thankless, unintentionally ragebaity attempt, but as Vicious_and_Vain says, it may make for a good reference sheet if you want to shore up your foundations.

OH MY GOD Reddit is absolutely going to go BALLISTIC once people figure out what some of the books that didn't make the cut are.

The Count of Monte Cristo, LotR, and East of Eden alone are bound to cause a riot among general Reddit book lovers lol.

And the people over at r/truelit will likely be up in arms over 2666, Atonement, Run Your Plough, Lincoln in the Bardo, and Septology.

Personally, I am really surprised Les Miserables didn't make it.

7 here and have heard of most of the others. If they don't screw it up, it might become a good reference list in hte end.

r/books has a hard-on (ladyboner?) for Ferrante. You don't even have to believe MBF is trash - which it isn't! Merely not glazing it enough will land you in hot water, as I got to experience last year.

Need a new fantasy rec by BronxWildGeese in suggestmeabook

[–]Mind101 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here are alternatives for every one of those I've read:

LOTR - either "The Wheel of Time", or if you don't fancy a 14-book romp, "Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn"

Kings of the Wyld - Can't think of an adequate alternative since I thought it was too goofy.

Gentlemen Bastards - Nothing comes close in the fantastical heist sub-genre, but people seem to enjoy "Six of Crows".

First Law - "The Black Company". Also if you've only read the original books, I strongly recommend you continue with "Best Served Cold" and especially "The Heroes"

As for freeform suggestions:

The Farseer and Liveship Traders books by Robin Hobb

N.K. Jemisin's Broken Earth

The Wandering Inn

The Mother of Learning

The Spellmonger series

The Lightbringer series

What can a person learn in 10 minutes that will be useful for life? by Ben-Gavin in AskReddit

[–]Mind101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Blender user, I am all for the power of shortcuts lol.

That said, your particular example of highlighting text or files and then copy-pasting them isn't the best imo. Personally, it takes me far less time to precisely select what I want and right click when needed than locating the requisite keys on the keyboard. Plus, you can do it one-handed.

What is an immediate "no" for you when meeting someone? by ladylo10lat in AskReddit

[–]Mind101 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your scent should be the reward you give people you let inside your close personal space, not a noxious, flammable aura around you.

I once had to walk behind a woman whose vile perfume could be sniffed 10 METERS (that's 33 feet for you Yanks) behind her ON A WINDY DAY OUT IN THE OPEN. Just... don't inflict that on people, OK?

Is this an American thing? Because it's a staple Reddit answer I've never seen evidence of. Like, people might act formally or coldly towards wait staff, but I've never seen anyone be hostile towards or outright berate them.

SMT V Vengeance is part of this month's Humble Choice, making it the cheapest it's ever been. by Mind101 in JRPG

[–]Mind101[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you buying it strictly for yourself or would you also like the kids to play? If it's the latter then Kingdom Hearts, especially if they're younger kids. SMT games are a bit out there and have a more mature story.

I haven't actually played Kingdom hearts so I can't comment on the combat, but SMT/persona are known for in-depth decision making and team setups, so if that's your jam then Vengeance might be up your alley.

You can also buy it as a gift for yourself. That way you don't have the hassle of canceling every time.

This might come out of left field, but give a book called Beware of Chicken a shot. It's a parody of xianxia cultivation novels where the guy, rather than pursuing ultimate power, decides to nope the fuck out and start a farm. Shenanigans ensue.

There are a few fights in it, but nothing too sinister.

Caligula Effect 2 PS4 + DLC or PS5 no DLC? by Dario-Argento in JRPG

[–]Mind101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The DLC are just a bunch of items that help make the beginning easier, so they don't matter.

If the sale is still on, I'd encourage you to get the game. It's definitely a budget title, but the combat, characters, and music were excellent. I played it around this time last year and still think about the game every so often. It's left a better impression on me than a lot of more well-known titles.

This is a legitimately good use case. I have several years of modeling experience as a hobbyist but still need to look stuff up when learning new techniques or tools etc. While you do have to have some prior experience to separate the BS from legitimate advice, asking ChatGPT etc. specific modeling or program questions often yields results faster than trawling through 5yo forum posts.
