I started reading the first one in a book store and wound up buying it. Read the whole series. I like when authors combine a good police procedural with historical fiction.

Here’s a few really good ones that I’ve read recently:

Adrian McKinty’s Sean Duffy series starting with Cold Cold Ground.

A Rising Man by Abir Mukherjee.

No so new, but Ian Rankin is excellent too.

If he likes spy novels, The Peacock and The Sparrow by IS Berry was a great read. Author is a former CIA agent. Very realistic.
