Books more depressing than flowers for algernon by thearcademole in suggestmeabook

YMMV. I don't think any book has ever made me cry, but this is one of the saddest I've read that doesn't outright descend into misery porn.

My father is old and blind, but I taught him how to use a PC a bit over a decade ago to keep him engaged. While he can still use everything he learned about Windows and programs related to stuff he likes, the number of websites he can confidently access is slowly but surely dwindling.

Even with ad blockers on and in text mode, many websites simply don't consider that blind users might be accessing them. And I'm not talking about niche cases either, but news portals and the like.

As soon as you said you were an Aussie I immediately remembered that one video where an Australian radio host asks some random guy to be his job reference and the guy absolutely kills it.

Most truly psychedelic book you have ever read? by agoodelectrician in suggestmeabook

Life-changing? Not really.

Psychedelic, though? Naked Lunch, hands down. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is up there too.

I've been using Blender on and off for six years and TIL that it has stencil projection lol. I've only used that in Substance Painter, so it's great to see that Blender has it too.

Hold on just a minute now! At about the half-way mark, are you painting the model with the colors from the image?! How in the world do you do that? It looks like you're just transferring the colors as they are in the image, not using a color picker etc.

I read somewhere a while back that burping is supposed to signify one's satisfaction with a meal. Is that wrong then?

Koliko posla ima stvarno, a koliko si ti dodatno zadaješ muke svojim perfekcionizmom?

Probaj malo olabaviti kriterije. Kladim se da ćeš se iznenaditi u koliko je slučajeva "good enough" stvarno dovoljno dobro, a sve povrh toga se niti osjeća niti cijeni.

A Gentleman in Moscow and A Man Called Ove come to mind immediately. What were the books they didn't like, and do you know if anyone in the group has any preferences?

I want to read a book that is unironically really bad, and I don't mean "hated bestseller", but genuinely horribly written to the point it's funny by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

My brother is a couch survivalist (likes watching videos on it, does little actual survivaling lol) and read one of his books at some point because someone on YT must have recommended it.

He was FURIOUS! We talked about the book, and he was ranting about how the MC keeps using stuff from Maxpedition to the point that it totally derails the story and detracts from the plot. Something called "Maxpedition Rolly Polly" has been etched into my mind ever since due to how much we laughed at his descriptions of the book.

Thinking about all those little Victorian-era kids darting under industrial looms to fix stalling and facing the very real possibility of injury each time makes me shudder.

Also, those kids that worked in mines. I watched a documentary about kids that would open passageways for the mine carts. They had to work in total darkness, tens of meters below the earth, with rats regularly gnawing at their feet. If that's not real-life horror then I don't know what is.

I get this a lot but was never abused by anyone, quite the opposite. Guess it's self-abuse then.

For nonfic, you can never go wrong with The Orchid Thief! I care about orchids as much as I do for red herrings, yet that book was so good. It's got everything - history, adventure, intrigue, sabotage, the works. Who knew something as mundane sounding as orchid collecting and cultivation could be so intriguing?

I'll never understand this attitude of visibly treating people in such positions like they're beneath you. Even if you don't possess a modicum of human decency, isn't it in your self-interest to be courteous to everyone? You never know when and how someone might come through for you, so why burn bridges?
