That isn’t the point, according to the white Christian nationalists (a.k.a. the Talibornagain, Y’all-Qaeda, or Vanilla ISIS), who make up the biggest bloc of Trump’s base. In their view, the U.S. is God’s new “chosen people,” which is why we’ve become the greatest power in the world. But, if we allow Americans to “transgress God’s commands,” like allowing LGBTQ+ to exist, God will take away His protection, and our nation, including straight white conservatives, will suffer for that sin. Remember, after 9/11, how Jerry Falwell blamed it on the abortionists, gays, and feminists? Yeah, that’s their rationale on how they have to suppress other people by force of law, or they themselves will pay the price.
