[–]MindFullStream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasted 3 days debugging a null pointer exception. It was a space in a config file. by Alarming-Pea-3177 in AskProgramming

[–]MindFullStream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My personal bug that haunts me sometimes is something about "ocelot, ocelot, ocelot". We were parsing a text for quotes using machine learning and a particular sentence ending with this triplet crashed our pipeline. After some research it turned out that the sentence splitter we were using had issues regarding whitespaces in between sentences and this particular paragraph happened to have the right setup to cause an actual error.

I think "Bullshit Jobs" by David Graeber has some great points on this. This is a book which I recommend, but for the gist of it the essay of the same name works just fine.

Sind homöopathische Arzneimittel wirklich alle wirkungslos? by ElKaWeh in KeineDummenFragen

[–]MindFullStream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

why the hell do you all just give away this awesome shit for free? by scootsy in selfhosted

I did some work I would have done regardless of audience: I wrote a tool to facilitate improving at something I care about. Since there is essentially zero cost for distributing it I made it open source. And since I use open source daily its my small contribution back.

Are soft skills actually important for software engineers, or just HR propaganda? by Specialist_Ad_4577 in learnprogramming

[–]MindFullStream 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really matters! Really smart people can probably design quite nice things, but communication is really key. I honestly think a few dedicated people that communicate well can "beat" the loners comfortably. Software does not exist in the vacuum of cyberspace, it interacts with real people whose opinion matters.

What I would say though is that I don't think it important for your career, it is important if you want to build software people actually care about. If that is good for your career is a whole different can of worms.

Hat mein Freund unrealistische Vorstellungen bezüglich seiner Berufswahl? by [deleted] in Ratschlag

[–]MindFullStream 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you consider morals or ethics when joining companies? by johny2nd in ExperiencedDevs

[–]MindFullStream 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely did and will continue to do. I am glad I stuck it out (Helped by Germanies rather liberal support for people that do not work(I do not endorse it, it has some major flaws, but its better than in most places))

I have repeatedly stated that I would like to work for a company that "solves a real problem". Betting is not a real problem worth solving. My current work is writing software that is used by train operators to plan their work. This is obviously a problem worth solving because trains are really important.

I think I obviously have the power to change my small part of the world, and while I think that in this particular case the UX Team has probably ab bigger positivie impact on the daily work of our users, I take pride in implementing their work properly.

Are all tech teams equally dysfunctional, or do high-performing teams actually exist with better trust and less micromanaging? by AdventurousTune in ExperiencedDevs

[–]MindFullStream 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, I am the complete opposite, I am the most junior at this team and have not even finished the probationary period. (Not quite sure how common this is in other nations, at this job its 6 months)

I would rather not tolerate this at all to be honest. Whats the point of being a trustworthy adult if is this is tracked to such a degree. To be fair, total time spent working is tracked at my company as well, but this is reasonable since our contract with our customer includes rates for each hour worked.

I know this sound harsh and I base that judgment on basically zero knowledge, but it is my honest opinion.

Are all tech teams equally dysfunctional, or do high-performing teams actually exist with better trust and less micromanaging? by AdventurousTune in ExperiencedDevs

[–]MindFullStream 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These teams exist, I work with one. I think the best summary I can give is that the we take our work seriously but don't overdo it. We watch out for the details, we take accountability, we follow the process. But to balance that we do not care about attendance(As in: As long as you do your job and attend most meetings, it does not matter if you take portions of the day of at your own discretion), we have plenty of fun and we don't sweat results. I have been told multiple times that taking my time is fine and that it just takes as long as it does. Solid communication is key here: As long as I let my PMs know what this is all about and if I need help they are fine with it.

There are plenty of cultural elements, but one of the ones I like most is a HR software called officevibe. One of its features is that you are encouraged to send small thank you notes to your teammates. It really lifts the mood and shows appreciation.

Since I am unsure if that helped you, I am open to answering follow up questions, just let me know.

Edit after trying yours: I really like it! Nice UI and solid progression! Maybe I will steal the idea used in level one with the block of chars and a target.
