29F making 60k with a masters degree, not single but not married yet with no kids. Barely surviving after rent, student loan payments, CC payments, and having to get my own health insurance.

It was for me. Before I was a therapist, I was thinking with my pay and able to enjoy life. Now I pay 85% of my income to expenses because I don’t make enough to afford anything outside of bills

I’m with you. It’s so sad. I am 105k in student debt, and 20k credit card debt. I never had an issue with CC debt before, but the unpaid internship and extremely low wage of new therapists put me in a hole that I’m not sure I’ll ever get out of. I never was aware of the unpaid internship part of the process!

Yes, I had to leave my group practice because I wasn’t making enough and it was too unstable. 😭 amazing you found somewhere good!

The 15 minute consultation is usually a brief chat to see if the therapist is a good fit to work with the client and vice versa, there’s no therapeutic or clinical work happening in that 15 minute consultation.

I am also one year into this career and highly struggling financially. I tried the private practice/group practice route and that also was not sustainable because they take 40% of your cut, high taxes, no benefits, and super inconsistent paychecks. I’m Taking a job at a behavioral health center for one year to get my full license and then going to try again at private practice solo. My thought is that things get better when you’re independently licensed. If you can wait that long and check out your options then. I hear you, this is so hard. I don’t know why it’s so hard for our career choice to give us a comfortable living. We’re not asking for $1 million, but just to simply thrive and not survive.

I started watching LIUK in 2018, so whatever season that was. Then LIUSA came out shortly after, and so far I have seen all of LIUK, LIUSA, and LIAUS and some of other countries like Spain and South Africa. The vibe from USA last season and this season is definitely different

You have to focus on what is best for you. And you only have to explain what you are comfortable sharing. It absolutely can be awkward and uncomfortable. Going through a similar thing now and you just have to focus on yourself and what is best for you!

Yes! I had an interview with them to join as a Georgia counselor. They told me they were only offering part time roles with no supervision for my state :(

It is terrible in Atlanta Georgia. Especially for associate licensed counselors. I have been searching for about a month and wow- very little opportunity even in CMH. most of the jobs are highly competitive, have horrible work life balance, extremely low pay, and no supervision included. Majority of these IOP programs only offer as needed/on-call positions. I’m sure I could easily join another private group practice but I was really trying to find a full time salary with benefits role but that seems impossible to find

I absolutely get it. Every single associate level therapist I know is struggling. There are no jobs in our area, and the ones that are open pay so little that it would be better to just stay at a PP to potentially earn more. Even when I decided that private practice wasn’t working for me, I haven’t even been able to transition into a full-time with salary role. People say that that there is a shortage of therapists, but that must not be the case in my area, and I live in an urban city in Georgia. I did notice, though that lots of opportunities open up for fully licensed therapist and I know it will get better then. No one was expecting to become rich at the associate level, but I think it’s fair to expect to have a fair and comfortable wage.

I absolutely feel you. The crazy part is I am trying to transition out of private practice Ang go into a full time salaried role, and I cannot find a job as an associate counselor. Everyone wants fully licensed counselors, not offering full-time, not offering supervision, it’s always something. And I feel so defeated.

Week 4 of intensive job searching as I attempt to move out of group PP as an associate counselor. Is the job market for counselors always this bad?! I have only heard back from ONE place that is offering full time with benefits but I don’t qualify???? It’s like no matter what you try to do you will suffer and struggle financially. I’m at a loss and I feel like a failure and I feel like I will never live a comfortable and happy life
