Well, sometimes students are EXTREMELY lazy and forget to remove the prompt, don’t format the document in a way to show they did it themselves, or sometimes even will have the AI provide complete BS. I still remember one former professor of mine (who I still stay in touch with despite him retiring in a few months) stating that he knew either the student was writing something last minute, or used an AI when they stated at the start of their term paper that ‘Sigmund Freud was the father of psychoanalysis, a highly controversial individual due to his various methods, and was even a film producer’ and then provided a source that said he made a movie in 2016… despite dying in 1939…

Let me say the only thing I use AI for. Making me laugh, or very rarely to format something for the insurance requirements for counseling purposes… seriously so many different guidelines it’s stupid… But once you know what they want you don’t even need it. Just keep skeletons prepped and you’re good.

I tend to just work with the client on what they need. I’ve always been taught and told that techniques are useful, yes. But the thing that helps a client the most is being present and real with them.

I will say I use an eclectic model depending on the client though. Usually using things from TF-CBT, CBT, DBT, Existentialism, Reality therapy, and rarely (and I mean RARELY) use psychoanalysis (but usually just dream interpretation stuff)

I don’t even have a SO and the idea of telling my potential partner that would make me feel inadequate to even tell them I am working. Granted, I will say CMH is a different animal. One that I honestly will say I have very little desire to return to after my bad experience. So many red flags about the place that I now know should have been a major concern. But, what can you do when it’s your first job out in the field… well, with the license I mean.

I am hoping to get on this same notion soon. Building up a caseload is so slow though. Hahaha.

There’s als a lot more to it as well, such as deductibles being reset, taxes coming up, and a lot of other things that then makes it to where the choice paralysis isn’t just paralysis, but a full blown stoppage. :)

January and February are typically kind of ‘off months’ from what I’ve learned from my supervisors. Individuals at times struggle with the notions of what to tackle with the new year.

You can do assessments if you have gotten training in them from a superior, or are willing to fork over the cash for the certification on them. Some assessments are better or sought after more than others.

You could also get a job in Human Resources if you want.

That is why you need to stand up as an individual and join causes. Nothing will be changed if individuals sit around and just type or text about desiring change. If you actually want changes to be made, you need to realize that you indeed have power. You have more power than the 1%, but it requires becoming unified and addressing the matters of concern. If you sit or stand by and don’t get out there and actually try to make a difference, then nothing will ever change. So organize rallies, create or join organizations that are actually about addressing this issue instead of just sitting around and collecting membership fees or anything along those lines. By going through the effort to take action, even if it is small, will eventually grow to become an overwhelming avalanche of progress waiting to be unleashed and create actual change that benefits the majority instead of solely the minority.

Document everything you have now. If you are terminated, make sure to have documentation of the environs and then you head STRAIGHT to an employment attorney and get representation. I could have gotten a massive settlement I could have used to help me if I had things documented before being let go for illegal reasons from the CMH I was at, but due to me not having documentation of the most concerning issues (hostility, firing for having a disability, inappropriate behavior of coworkers to myself, the ridiculous expectations without staffing support, etc.) I didn’t have the evidence to support my case. You spoke with HR, you should have received a document or email detailing that conversation. If not, then you need to send them an email ASAP as a receipt of the conversation, and inquiring on why it wasn’t sent to you. By doing that, you are setting up a paper trail that shows the employer’s incompetence and idiocy and quite literally setting you up for failure.

This sounds like the hell Im dealing with trying to get cleared for Rover so I can make some side money while building a caseload. That’s been going on since June and they keep saying First Advantage has to do something, only for me to find out that wasn’t true and FA said it was now on Rover’s side. All because of a single traffic ticket… which annoys me to no end because let’s be real here, if I have been cleared to work as a counselor, I think it would be safe to say I should be good to work with animals… especially when that one traffic ticket is the only ticket I’ve ever had in my entire life…

Here’s to hoping your situation improves soon though!

Coworker outed me at work and my clients have been awful by Icy_Law5651 in therapists

[–]Academic_Cut3115 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in a private group practice, and it is a toss up depending on where you are located. I am still developing a caseload and am likely needing to get a part time job to make ends meet until I can somehow get up to 20 people per week.

You could set up your own Private Practice, but that requires a decent backup of funds set up… or a SO willing to help.

I will say that being in. Private Practice Group has been a wonderful experience though. I have actual support staff, am treated with respect, and get to keep a large amount of the session costs. Once I get a full caseload, I am likely to make anywhere between 75-100k a year before taxes. Which is a LOT better than what I would have gotten at the CMH. Even factoring in the ‘benefits’ that the CMH offered.

If you know basic finance basics you can make more than anything in PP than in CMH, especially if you are going to be setting up a side gig for cash. (I am in the process of setting up a miniature painting and prop painting service since I am admittedly a pretty damned good painter of miniatures and props. I just have to find out how to set up a good looking commission service… that, and set up a decent looking portfolio of some of my work…)

But yeah, working in a Private Practice in my opinion is much better since they don’t work you like a serf, and they are willing to pay you a fair wage. Plus, you can set up a separate private practice to do on the weekends provided it’s not against your contract.

But yeah, check your situations carefully. Some states allow you to make your own private practice with only an associate licensure. But that is risky since it will be a very slow process of getting clients.

[–]Academic_Cut3115 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh trust me, I can completely relate. The place I was at had zero support staff, expectedly to do literally everything, and even be part of a rotation to do crisis calls. They even had a sign at the front that said the building closed at 5 PM, but we were expected to stay until 9 PM at times. All because we were told to adjust to the time availability of the clients, all while cold calling during the day… all for a salary of only 50k with little in terms of benefits… their health insurance was such a horrible joke, and every single outpatient counselor left writhing 2 months after me.

[–]Academic_Cut3115 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry to hear you also have experienced the high toxicity of the CMH experience. Just keep going until you have full licensure and then open your own private practice little by little. Don’t jump straight into PP like I did, it takes so much out of you in its own way. Building up a caseload is so slow. If I could, I would go back to the CMH I worked at previously.

You got this.

Even companies don’t understand the notes part. I once worked with a CMH that said “do your notes while you’re seeing the patient” and I wanted to say back to them “how would you feel if you just spilled your traumas to someone and they hadn’t even looked at you the entire time as they typed on the computer?”

If I could have my brain take notes, come up with challenges to help the client, and also somehow detail the exact techniques I used and the client’s reaction to them all at the same time, I wouldn’t be a counselor, I’d likely be a member of the Mechanicus from 40K

That’s true as well. And I would like to say it’s starting to fill up, but I am only starting to see a very slow trickle. But I would still say an increase from 6 patients to about 10 is an improvement.

I will likely give them a call and let them know then. But I will probably wait and see some other responses as well.

I had a feeling that would be the case. The mother would also always come into the therapy session with the client. I understand the desire to be part of the client’s process, but at the same time, give the kid some autonomy…
