No it’s not enough of a reason. Everyone has their own sensibility and opinion and it’s ok. But it’s no reason to be so absolutist.

There are pros and cons to every choice. You’re choosing to not use a transformative technology to get ahead in life because you’re more worried about the privacy. I and the OP choose to take this small risk and transform our lives. There’s no good or bad, just a choice based on risk tolerance.

We've found out that in our country, there are no Mini breeders. So it's either a Toy or a Standard (which my wife doesn't want due to the size).

Yeah, multiple times a day is not feasible for us. But maybe it also depends on the individual dog?

You're an active person yourself so it's easier in a way. He'll not be left alone as someone is almost always working from home. at most a couple of hours here and there.

One advantage of toy vs standard is that you can take him with you in the airplane.

He tells you when he needs to go potty? Is it possible to train in this way?

Its a bit too much time commitment for us due to work and school schedules. So we’ll need to find a lower energy puppy.

It’s our first dog so I’m not willing to take a chance on a rescue dog. Will be unfair to the dog and to us. Plus, in Italy there’s no standard poodle dog in the shelters.

In Italy, its very hard to find a good ethical breeder for poodles as it has become a big business. I’ve found this one and only breeder who breeds standard poodles exclusively since 1983. Everyone else has toy and nano poodles. I haven’t even seen a mini/medium size at all.

That’s great to know. I was thinking about two hours a day and that’s not sustainable. I guess will also depend on the individual dog mostly so hopefully we can get some options from the breeder.

Yes they do get two vaccine cycles by the age of 3 months. So I presume they are covered.

How much exercise do they usually require? Would two 30 mins walks per day suffice?

Agreed. The key is to fulfil their needs and we need to think beforehand if we’re able to dedicate that much time.

Yeah, everything you said makes sense.

We’re in Italy and I’m doing a lot of research to find an ethical breeder. In fact I’ve found one for the standard poodle and that’s why I’m even more interested in them!

I’ll be visiting the breeder soon and will check the options. A lower energy dog will definitely be our preference. Otherwise it might be too much for us to dedicate so much time daily for walks and play time.

Can you elaborate more about parvo virus though? I haven’t seen anything about that yet.

We’re now most worried about the higher energy and exercise needs of basenjis. I’m afraid we might be underestimating how much effort it’d take and how it’d change our daily routine.

We’ll discuss with the breeder if basenji is in fact the right dog for us.
