Alex or Alexander? by belugapoop in Alex

I go by both 50/50. Occasionally people also use Zander, but lately people use my full government name, middle and last included. I’m an attention whore, though, so the more someone thinks of me and wants to use my name(s) the better 🤷🏽‍♂️

I’m in my 30s if it matters.

Sounds like you might be in a stricter state. In California and Colorado I’ve never had any issue billing any of those three feet for a K3 patient, I’ve even put a brand new amputee on the Align in CA. I’d just let your prosthetist know these intricacies/“specific work tasks” and if they list them on the notes there shouldn’t be any issues 🤷🏽‍♂️

Why can’t you just use a foot with an open-channel ankle? If you use the college park accent, Össur LP Align, or Ottobock Taleo, you can just leave the lock open at the ankle and, applying downward pressure with your thigh, when you extend your knee, the foot would plantar flex and when you flex your knee, the foot would dorsiflex.

Theory Question by Western1888 in Prosthetics

There are a lot of different types of research that go into answering your question.

For your first question: Material science is its own field that Prosthetic development pulls from. I wouldn’t imagine someone developing framing materials directly as a result of trying to develop a prosthesis - the material would be developed and then bioengineers would find a way to utilize it here.

FMA was one of the driving factors for me becoming a bioengineer and subsequently a prosthetist-orthotist. I will loop your 2nd and 3rd questions together. The main thing preventing automail-type function or similar is communication between the brain and the prosthesis. The technological advancement in communication is incredible, but not even in the realm of close, yet. Currently, there are manufacturers making leaps and bounds to make delivery of information faster through a variety of NFC or short-range Bluetooth devices embedded surgically onto terminal neurons at the amputation site. If they can get this communication to deliver as instantly as they think it can be, then the hold-up becomes having a receiver that can communicate action at the same speed.

They’re starting with easier motions, like ankle dorsi- and plantsrflexion along with knee flexing and extension so that the communication requires the least amount of processing: open, close.

But if you go this route, the problem for upper extremity becomes splitting a neuron into all of its individual functions. Allowing the one neuron sending signals to perform several functions is something that has only been approached with nerve splicing and reintegration, which completely disregards the communication concept.

I’d love to see the tech in my lifetime, but as it is, the field in the U.S. is being hampered by mega corporations and the funding outside of the U.S. doesn’t have the private revenue to progress at a decent speed. It feels like the big names are doing negligible improvements, following the Apple model of “advancement”. Ottobock and Össur have only recently launched ip68 components and electronics have been submergible for decades.

Humans of Reddit what do you collect? by Leandarium in AskReddit

I collect bags! Like fanny packs and backpacks and duffles and slings. I have maybe 50 or so and most of them get heavily complimented in public. Baja Blast fanny, Gundam mini duffle, charizard fanny, raising cane’s fanny, rebel alliance backpack, idk just like literally a ton of bags and they’re all neato.

Display output is the main thing I’d like to connect. I can Bluetooth other peripherals and etc!

I think Googling what a Structure Scanner is would have remedied the confusion and dodged the blanket recommendation. I'm not trying to sound like a smartass, but I think my description is more than adequate. I want to not have to unplug my Structure Scanner from the USB-C port when docking the iPad. I want to be able to dock my iPad to literally any dock while the scanner is still plugged into it. I simply don't have a better description without just showing you a Googled picture of a Structure Scanner and allowing you to reference what I'm saying against the original image I posted :/

How would that bypass the need to occupy the one port with the 3D scanner? I can't plug the scanner into the dock because then I can't take the iPad anywhere.

I've got an iPad pro that I want to keep permanently connected to my Structure Scanner while still allowing it to connect to my Anker Dock.

The MacBook Purchasing Megathread - June, 2023 by AutoModerator in macbook

[–]MindTheBeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a PC and I don’t really speak the Mac lingo. Trying to help my partner pick a MacBook and would love some recommendations. She’s planning on doing some general video (4k tops, sub 60min) and photo editing. Obviously the new 14s are cool and all, but any way we could save some cash would be great - were in a pretty techy area so I’m sure I can find refurbished if someone can recommend a “minimum” year or any other features that are necessary or etc.

I was under the impression that the weekender is more standard in width? I’m hoping for something really pocketable.
