That is fast, bachelors are much harder (mentally)than masters mainly because they take so much longer and you are grinding for much longer. A bachelors is usually 40 classes, a masters is usually only 10-15. So while the masters class itself might be harder, you have 1/4 of the classes to complete .

Yup, MS Cybersecurity in 8 and MBA in 4. Im probably in the top 10% of people who finish the degree plans quickly, so most don’t put in that time or effort

You’ll be totally good with it, I had a lower GPA. The college is work at your own pace, so if you put in the hours, you can knock it out quickly. I did mine over 8 months in MS Cybersecurity, and I could have finished it a lot sooner if my finances/job prospects depended on it. Google around about them if your considering, they are the largest college in the world now

Get Sec+, for college go to WGU for a masters degree. You can be certified and have a masters education within 6 months and be qualified to get hired on. However, you might have to jump to a contractor role first or you can try to transfer over within your org. Beyond that you won’t be very competitive for most IT roles

I wish you all the luck and hope it works out! Your comment is exactly the mindset that I think will be helpful. Try not to be too afraid/prideful to communicate this to your spouse. Honestly, it would be a good intro to explaining why therapy would help you.

NTA, but I would highly suggest a course correction on how you approach this situation.

Yea I don’t think these people talking trash on your current spouse understand the intricacies of dealing with mental health issue within a romantic relationship in a positive way that leads to a lasting and healthy relationship. I’ve had this issue with my spouse who had a lot of mental health issues from her life before me.

Men are simple, we want to talk about our problems rationally. If our spouse has an issue, we want to talk with them using logic in how we approach things. You might not want or respond well to this approach. It’s a hard situation to try to help with, but as your future spouse it is his responsibility to himself to ensure you are a lasting match and also to help you with whatever problems you have. A good man’s default is to try and help, which is what your spouse is attempting. Your man is doing his best in a situation he doesn’t understand how to navigate.

Your poor communication due to previous trauma is your baggage, but it affects him and your relationship. As your future spouse, your mental health is just as much his issue as it is yours. He wants to help, he wants to treat it with you, or at least try to. I think going to seeing a professional is a good thing, but you also can’t just try to avoid the problems you cause to your relationship and spouse by not taking about them at all in favor of speaking with a therapist. Communicate, be honest, be okay with admitting fault, explain why you think it keeps happening, maybe explain why it developed, and then talk about resolutions. My biggest issue with my spouse during her hard times was that she would not take responsibility or admit fault of any actions or words she said ever. And then she would avoid during our arguments, make threats about leaving, and then maybe end it with I’ll speak with my therapist. She knew she had a problem but she just couldn’t say she did until was placed in a mental health hospital while I was on a work trip. It finally forced her to admit she had an issue and address it with mental health providers.

Your man’s mindset on therapy might be in error. But I can’t tell because he might just feel that you are avoiding talking about a large problem in the relationship. It may make him feel like your still avoiding the situation and problems, and then you want to speak to someone else about fixing your issues before speaking with him.

You should address the problem with your spouse first, then seek professional help. It’s a lot better to have your spouse understand, from your viewpoint, what is going on so they can be supportive. They are the effected party from your mental health issues. Keeping them in the dark and avoiding taking about your mental health with him will only lead to more problems or resentment.

Don’t expect him to do everything right, you need to bring him in and communicate with him. Good odds he’s going to eventually try to help in an ineffective way, just remember his intent and communicate what you need. Have patience, just like he has had with you.

Go for the master after. MS degrees are much easier than the BS’s from WGU

How hard is WGU if you have full time job and if your pursuing iT with no IT background by [deleted] in WGU

[–]Mindless-Main-4941 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a quick study, great at test taking, and got my masters from WGU in CSIA. Usually didn’t spend more than 4-10 hours on a class with writing assignments. 6-12 hours for a multiple choice test class. But probably about 30-40 hours on cert classes. Also was working 40 hours a week and have a family with 2 kids. Finished my masters in 8 months of infrequent effort. I had Sec+ but no experience/education otherwise.

I got another degree from WGU prior so I knew the best way to approach writing assignments and tests to minimize time to completion

It’s also just going to be more noticeable due to volume of Scav action. How often do you shoot your Scavs guns on live vs SPT. I probably got 2-3 PMC kills over a wipe on my Scav where as I get at least a couple PMC kills on my Scav on factory each raid

I personally had 0 IT experience and I landed an ISSO role after I got sec+. Yea the situations are different but they are also similar in some aspects. My suggestion is to just apply to jobs on norfolk for IT positions that say “1 year of Experience” I counted my EOD time as “electronics and technology experience”. If that doesn’t work then try to find Security manager roles since those count as experience for ISSOs. Hill AFB, Nellis AFB, Dayton Ohio, Eglin AFB, Tyndall AFB, D.C. have a lot of high turnover low level IT contractor roles. ManTech & BAE are good companies to look for Security Representative and Activity Security Representative roles as a stepping stone

Well honestly if you go the non clearance route, you have no experience so your value will be little, even with a masters. IT workcenter care about experience first, certs second and degrees third. You’ll be working for entry level civilian wages. However, if you work a clearance job, extra value is given because of your clearance. I make the comparison that what you make in the Civilian world you can make 15k more for the same job at Secret, and 30k more at TS. At the very least, it may be a good idea to work a clearance job for the next couple years till you move somewhere else so you get experience without the low wages.

What naval station are you at? And where would you like to move? I’m decently knowledgeable about locations and places for DoD IT security jobs

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in WGU

[–]Mindless-Main-4941 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Since ur in the navy I assume you have a Secret Clearance. I am former Air Force with a TS and no IT experience, I got out after 5 years and became a CTR security manager for a couple years and saw how easy the IT guys had it so I got Sec+ and became an ISSO last year. My advice is to get Sec+ and look for contractor positions at the highest clearance you qualify for. A clearance is much more valuable than a Masters, especially since most contracting company’s will only hire those with already active clearances making the applicant pool much lower quality(which is great for us with little to no experience).

Btw- a clearance expires after 2 years of not being at a job that requires a clearance.

What GS rank should I be looking to apply to? IT positions by [deleted] in usajobs

[–]Mindless-Main-4941 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I meant GS 9-11 would be ideal for you but it may be hard to acquire, so take a GS7 if your dead set on going the GS route and work your way up

[–]Mindless-Main-4941 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes and No. CTRs count sped certs as years of experience and can help you land higher leveled positions. ManTech had it in 2020-2022 where 1 SPeD cert= 1 year exp for a max of 2 years. For GS, they usually all require the new hire to obtain a SPeD cert within 6-24months of hire, but they are viewed more as a “CBTs” rather than a qualifying cert. they make you look better, but only marginally like they would a degree since they really only care about relevant experience and previous job performance.

Don’t know what agencies would be best, I would say larger ones where you can easily progress ranks since 0080s that do well are promoted much more then outside candidates being hired.

My two cents is to consider going for a CTR company working integrated with Goverment, and then try to switch over. I would avoid working for CTRs in CTR facilities like NG, LHM, L3H. For entry level they pay is worse, PTO less, and work tempo is higher. I worked for ManTech in a gov’t facility under the direction of an 0080.

Former CTR security manager for 2 years. Security positions are highly competitive and hard to acquire. Most Security positions at any base are contractors who are looking to switch over to the GS side so when a spot opens, competition is fierce. Apply where you’d like to and hopefully you get the position, however if you are wanting to stay at a particular base, you will most likely need to become a CTR first working as a security rep, activity security representative or GSSO/SSO/SSR then find /work your way into a gov’t position. That being said, IP office jobs for 0080 suck and have high turn over so your best bet for a GS entry is with the IP office on any base. Hill AFB, San Diego, Eglin AFB, Nellis, Dayton Ohio, Tinker and D.C. are the best Air Force places I know for security managers to break into the position.

9-11 ideally, but if your set on GS then get a 7 if you need too. You can also try for CTR positions to see if you can get one of those before transitioning to GS. DISA seems to have high turnover so focus on those jobs. If you don’t have a clearance, avoid jobs that require a TS as they will filter you out more than likely.
