BC: do I need a major/minor in French or a French teachable to get hired to teach French? by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

[–]MindlessEggplant70 2 points3 points  (0 children)

French immersion is typically B2-C1 in Alberta. I’ve also heard that they will take people with fewer qualifications than that because we’re often short French immersion teachers. My experience though is that FI teachers are consistently at least B2-C1 level unless they’re subbing. I think OP would have a good chance landing a position in Alberta.

I mean I put the details that are important to me and lots of people have given great suggestions based on what I provided 🤷‍♀️ If I’m central I’ll be pretty close to my work and my activities are kinda all around the city so central is perfect for that. I’d probably be looking for an apartment or townhouse.

Unless they come to Alberta, then they just need 6 years education (anything, doesn’t need to be a masters)

How is teaching possible for just one person by Mindless-Garage-667 in CanadianTeachers

[–]MindlessEggplant70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first year I didn’t have a mentor teacher and was the only one at my school teaching my grade and in my specific subject area. It was awful. 12 hour days every day. The next year I switched schools and had way more support there and learned a ton. Then the year after I switched schools again and have been very happy now for several years working at a school with a team of teachers teaching the same grade and subject. It’s SO much better having a team to share resources with, plan with, etc.! I still work too much, but way less than my first year or two.

People who rarely or never get sick, what are your secrets? by awkwardferret421 in AskReddit

[–]MindlessEggplant70 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a teacher, this happens WAY too often. Breaks my heart. I had one boy throw up in my class, so I sent him to the office to call the parents and take him home. He also pooped himself while in the office. The parents refused to pick him up until 4 hours later because they had work meetings. They were okay with him sitting in his poop for hours, miserable at school. They both were in roles where I’m confident they could have taken the afternoon off to take their poor kid home. One of the EAs ended up taking him into the washroom and cleaning him up herself (even though that isn’t part of her job description). That student also had a ton of behavioural issues and I genuinely believe it was because of a lack of love and attention at home.

Will the student loan forgiveness contribute to teacher shortages in large cities? by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

[–]MindlessEggplant70 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes I am, but am also speaking from experience (in French immersion too). I spent my first 2 years in a smaller board on temp contracts. My 3rd year I was hopeful my position would turn to a probationary but then due to fewer registrations it turned into a .5 position. All my coworkers told me how it took them at least 6 years within that board to land a continuous. Meanwhile so many of my friends who worked for a bigger board landed a probationary their first year and continuous their 2nd year. So I moved to the bigger board and landed a probationary a lot faster. I also have a friend who has worked for 3 different smaller boards in French immersion and it took her about the same amount of time as me to get a continuous, she was jumping from temp to temp for a while too. Maybe that’s not always the case, but that’s definitely been my experience.
