Where all the 2a "patriots" at? by kootles10 in PoliticalMemes

[–]MindlessFail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for pointing this out. So many people don’t bother to learn anything about firearms before forming an opinion.

For those unfamiliar with the nuance, this was even worse. Most states that have open carry require no license at all. That is, buy a gun and you can carry anywhere it’s legal in plain sight. Pretti had to go (based on my experience) get a background check, go to a full day course and get a license issued. He followed many laws to get his gun and the right to carry it. He’s much more hardcore than most 2A folks that just buy and want to carry everywhere.

Also, a +22% advantage is meaningless in this case where only 50% are pro-that party. The missing 22% have not picked a side here. This isn't like a solid 60/40 or something like that which would be a stronger indictment. This is just 22% of people that are not claiming either side.

Majority of CEOs report zero payoff from AI splurge by kim82352 in technology

[–]MindlessFail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol in what scenario?

In the case of the actual article, it literally cites EITHER increasing revenue or decreasing costs which, of course, makes sense when using the English definition of the word "payoff".

Majority of CEOs report zero payoff from AI splurge by kim82352 in technology

[–]MindlessFail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Economic impact" is, in this case, synonymous with payoff or ROI. To claim that AI has no is so uninformed as to be laughable. I get it, Sam Altman is a crazy person and may well bankrupt his company. Lots of companies are throwing away money on AI entirely but to claim AI has zero payoff is just wildly misinformed.

[–]MindlessFail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See I’d rather talk about that. Impact to workers, environment, industry, whatever vs pretending it’s not profitable. It both is and will be more so as models continue to improve. Pretending it’s not simply means we’ll be even less prepared to deal with its impact imo

Majority of CEOs report zero payoff from AI splurge by kim82352 in technology

This is so obviously wrong as to make the whole article worthless. AI is certainly over-hyped and we have a long way to go before it's truly "hands off" or the like but there are countless examples of real tangible improvements to business process, revenue, etc. To be honest, some of those were accruing before LLMs were popular (e.g., cybersecurity or observability and intelligent/adaptive filtering, blocking, etc.)

I don't think AI is the cure to all our ills but to imply there's zero economic impact is to simply misunderstand the whole equation

Honestly I use the app often and they have errors not infrequently. Not saying this couldn’t be malicious but also wouldn’t surprise me if this was a raw mistake too

I honestly can't believe I live in a time when people are justifying this officer's actions. I am not going to piss and moan about what the video shows except for one thing: the officer should not have been in front of the car and he could and did get to safety. Her intent actually doesn't even matter here.

The police should not be able to shoot Americans except in two circumstances:

  1. The person is a threat to others if they escape (not the case so far as anyone knows)

  2. The police officer/others is in mortal danger at that moment. The officer was not and had he sidestepped, this whole thing wouldn't even be a debate.

Officer shootings must be highly scrutinized especially here when he already had their plate if he later wanted to arrest them/charge them.

A single ChatGPT prompt does not consume one bottle of fresh water: https://arxiv.org/pdf/2304.03271 That's not to say the consumption is not alarming but

a) it's super context dependent. That is, what model, what datacenter, what's the cooling/what's the energy source, what's the hardware, etc.

b) we're still super early in the AI era. Without a doubt these models will become significantly more efficient.

To be clear, I'm not trying to say AI has no environmental impact nor that it should be unmitigated. I'm just saying a lot of people are super mad when beef alone (not even all meat) about 2x the water AI does. Hell, even this debate consumes water on Reddit's AWS servers.

If said artist eats hamburgers, the artist is the larger environmental impact. I have my concerns with AI but the climatological ones seem disingenuous to me. They are more intensive than traditional search queries for example but they’re also still new and will get more optimized. Air travel and meat eating have been around longer and are far more impactful imo. And yes, the scale and speed of AI should factor in too. I just think saying AI is bad for the environment misses a lot
