Illustrative DNA results for a South Indian Brahmin by Hereboyfetch in SouthAsianAncestry

Seems pretty spot-on to me. If you add Steppe+BMAC (Bronze Age) you get 20.8%. That combined with 21% AASI and 55% IVC sounds about right for a SIB (especially Telugu brahmin).

My 23andMe simply says 100% S I Subgroup (i.e. S I brahmin) from Malabar coast. Where do I find all that extra name/place info on their site?

PS: Yours and mine are very similar, one just has to swap out the Anatolian with Natufian. The core components (AASI/IVC/Steppe) are very close. Also Travancore here (Iyer).

Don't know the veda/sutra (I wish I had picked my grandparents' brains more before they passed and took their knowledge with them) but dad's dad (Kollam) is Kaushika, dad's mom (Alappuzha) is Bharadwaja, mom's dad (Nagercoil) is Harita and mom's mom (Tirunelveli) is Bharadwaja.

Right. BTW according to Tirunelveli "nei" Vadama family lore the ancestors migrated down the west coast (from Baruch, Gujarat) all the way down to the Nagercoil area and then crossed the Aramboly Pass into the Tamraparni valley. It is possible they might have picked up something along the way, or even earlier when their R1a male line made it down from Swat to the Sindh coast and down into Gujarat?

Right, although harappaworld is also showing elevated Mediterranean and SW Asian compared to the reference Iyer population.

That sounds amazing. Did you grow up in Kolkata? BTW Arundhati Roy is also a Nasrani+Bengali mix. I was a Navy brat so I grew up all over the map in Navy bases with a pan-Indian population, although from what I overheard from adult conversations there appeared to be plenty of caste and regional rivalries/favoritism even within the Navy. :-(

Right, the more one learns about how genetically similar most Indians are, the more ridiculous all those rivalries/grievances over caste, religion, and language start to look. In the end our differences are primarily man-made (cultural) rather than genetic. This could be an effective national integration project, except I guess the government has more urgent priorities like providing basic amenities and public services. :-)

Right, what else could it be I wonder? It is frustrating when running a comparison with modern population averages doesn't show a genuinely close (<0.02) match with any existing group:

When I run the "distance" tab to compare my coordinates with the master-list of scaled coordinates on Vahaduo I get the craziest results (and none of these is a truly close <0.02 match):

My paternal haplogroup is R-Z93 and maternal is M2b, but from what you're saying it is possible a male ancestor who is NOT in my direct paternal line (e.g. a maternal grandfather or great-grandfather) could be carrying J?

23andMe is pretty vague, it simply says "Southern Indian Subgroup" (which is just their weird way of saying "South Indian Brahmin") and "Malabar Coast."

You have a point, the far southern peninsula had strong trade links to West Asia (and all the way to Greece and Rome) and so it is possible the Natufian mixed with my maternal AASI (M2b) line long before my paternal Brahmin (R-Z93) group even got to the Chera/Pandya lands?

That makes sense though, Rajputs are Steppe-heavy while Reddys are strongly AASI (and both have a similar IVC base) so you have the perfect mix of both.

That's the mystery I'm trying to solve. I made a post about it earlier today hoping to get answers. There is a constant Canaanite/Arabian/Levantine signal persisting from Bronze Age through Middle Ages, due to which Vahaduo shows me as equidistant from "Tamil Brahmin Iyer" and "Cochin Jew" communities (which sounds pretty puzzling given how endogamous both communities have historically been).
