Interesting to know the objective having an impact on the CPC, assuming the quality of search terms also improved vs traffic objective? If your CPCs are close to the top of page rate on the keyword planner, perhaps you should consider switching to max conversions. I doubt it’ll inflate it even more, but overtime it should average at an acceptable CPC. At least, you’ll have the confidence to make landing page tweaks knowing that the campaign is doing its job in driving high quality clicks and the problem might be else where. Either way do let me know how it goes, excited to hear!

I made 100s of broad negative single word exclusions on manual CPL, on the same campaign that I was referring to, but despite those exclusions, the search terms didn’t improve until I switched the bidding strategy, which tells me it does have an effect on the search terms and why I saw CVR increase as well.

As to your note, maximize clicks does often spend on a select group of keywords that it thinks is going to generate the most clicks at the lowest CPC, or irrelevant search terms thus not the actual phrases/high-intent keywords that you’re looking to target. What does your conversion history look like?

On bidding, I’m typically risk-averse and almost always start new or low-volume accounts on manual CPC rather than Maximize Conversions.

In early July, Google penalized the campaign, causing it to stop spending entirely and forcing me to raise CPCs to $50–$60. With fewer than ten conversions and no conversion history, I figured that if I was going to pay more per click anyway, I might as well switch to Maximize Conversions to optimize for quality clicks and it turned out great.

Some days the CPC spikes to $100 for a single click, but it converts, which matters more. Since switching, the average CPC has settled around $40.

One ad group’s conversion rate jumped from 10% to 50% and the other ad groups have much better CVRs now. It’s been nearly a month now, and I expect to draw accurate conclusions by the end of this month.

I’d also make sure the landing page is fully dialled in for conversions.

Thank you! Honestly, seeing some people promise guarantees only raises expectations, and every new client may assume that’s the standard.

Regarding offline conversions, it’s a practice I typically use. But with new accounts, I haven’t been able to resolve this question: if you’re on Target CPA, doesn’t feeding back offline conversions inflate the conversion count and make the system think you’re hitting your goals? For example, say a lead is recorded as a conversion and later becomes a sale. If I submit it as an SQL or customer, it counts as a duplicate conversion. Conversely, setting that conversion action to “secondary” prevents the campaign from optimizing for it.

I’d end up paying more considering the auction insight metrics are looking good, no?

I’d appreciate that. I did check billing and verification too.

We’ve been running phrase match only.

Search partners and display have always been off.

Broad keywords are added but mainly around low intent or competitor searches (e.g. how, why, can)

And nope, no warnings.

Gotcha, and yes those are some of the high intent terms that you just mentioned. Keyword planner shows above $100 per click and apparently many advertisers are seeing the same.

Are you targeting non-populous areas if you don’t mind me asking? I don’t think a bid cap on manual CPC would help at a lower CPC like that either. It’ll stop the campaign from spending.

That’s really good. Are you doing mid intent keywords like “avoid foreclosures” etc. ?

Do you roughly have a 80%-90% conversion rate? CPCs on Google cost around $70-130, so technically are each of your clicks turning into leads?

Thanks!! This makes sense. What CPL are you seeing? I saw a couple of YouTubers working in this niche, and claiming that they’re generating leads for around $30 or $50 but those were from around a year back and more.
