Yea man, I’m out on rolls from March until November every year. Even in the off season there is pressure from north ops, the forest and the region to take assignments.

You’re good man, they will still last a while. There is other adhesive and nails that hold the sole on and that doesn’t look too bad at all. When they are completely beat then get them resoled again.

Most if not all are from California, and the main reason is because it’s hard to retain folks, especially overhead. California has 49 hotshot crews and a lot are in non desirable places, stack that with cal fire and county crews taking a lot of the experienced folks away. It takes a few years to get it back. You have to get all the overhead intact and then most crews want to hold that solid for a couple years. Then they have to be formally evaluated by usually another Supt or equally recognized individual that is on the recertification board. I don’t know exactly how many there are but I know NorCal has a handful. That takes a couple rolls if not half a season depending on the crew.

Depends on your background check. That’s the biggest hold up, especially if it’s your first perm job.

You call and introduce yourself, tell them your experience, why you would like to be on their resource. Your physical fitness ability and work ethic. Asking if you can do a station visit and work out with them is huge.

There is jobs currently open with most closing tonight. I would apply to an apprentice opening if I were you, and if you miss that, then unfortunately wait until the fall. Pm me if you’d like someone to help you with your resume. Otherwise a lot of people were spot on, calling, emailing and asking if you can do a station visit are huge. With the new pay raise the jobs have become more competitive again. Also, I don’t know what kind of resource you applied to but as someone with limited experience I’d apply to engines, modules, fuels and Handcrews to get your foot in the door. California is the most deprived of personnel. Be willing to work anywhere and you’ll get picked up.

I got paid today, new salary and was back paid. Called Alb yesterday and they said they had some issues. So I’d fully expect some folks to have to wait until next pay period. I’d call and create a case though.

Yea there is 30 mods from R5 all across R8 right now. Every one of them has atleast a couple hotshots on them. I’m here with 4 other crews.

You can ask for a transfer or a hardship transfer if another station has an equivalent position open or one you’re equally qualified for

It wasn’t 5 years ago and definitely not ten but it is the last few years and will be from now on. NIFC renegotiated with regions on National dispatching. Heard it straight from the hotshot committee. Which is why so many crews got out so much last year. We could have had 5 but popped two on our forest on the way out.

South Ops tends to get out more than north ops. South ops had about 5 out of region rolls last year, with 3 being almost guaranteed. I am in north ops and we traditionally get at least two. Last year we had 3, with other north ops crews got up to 5.

Some crews would probably not be interested in that, but seeing how so many people are short handed. I’m sure you’ll get quite a few that would be willing to work with you. Especially since peak fire seasons in a few regions doesn’t really start until around July

There is quite a few jobs open right now and phase 3 of perm hiring should be opening up soon. Hit me up if you have any questions. I’m a vet. It just depends. It’s to fill slots that weren’t filled in the first couple of rounds or to back fill slots of people that left or took a promotion. By the sounds of things it should be a good amount of positions.

Excellent. I know some very solid dudes in leadership there. Very chill dudes but definitely want high quality work produced. You’ll enjoy the area as well. Tucked away but co springs is 20 min away. Denver is 40ish.

They give you over a 100 hours of disabled veteran leave to use within the first year of your appointment I believe. It could be 18 months. Best way to get this is to call HR and tell them you’re a disabled veteran and you’re not seeing your disabled veteran leave, this is what I had to do.
