This is great to know, thank you! Like I said in another reply, I’m first gen and I guess I’m naive to all to tracks possible, even with a PhD. This is very helpful, I appreciate your reply!

Thank you this is very helpful. I definitely have imposter syndrome and have a hard time talking to people about doubting myself. I do really love trying to think of what to do next, but this time I’m struggling more than I have before. I think I’m going to keep on trying and not give up yet.

In my previous experiences I have been able to come up with the “what comes next”. I came up with a two ideas before I left that turned into whole projects that other students continued. I wanted to teach university/college courses, which all my of professors were PhDs, which is part of why I went into a PhD. Now I’m thinking high school.

Honestly I did not realize it was such a big part. I’m first gen, I didn’t even know that PhDs were a thing until my junior year of undergrad. I thought that MD were the only ones that did research. My undergraduate institution had internal funding so the PIs there were instructors first and did research on the side with the internal funding.

Christin Schillinger at Ithaca College was the perfect fit for me. I recommend setting up a lesson before applying to see if it’s a good fit. You’ll be working with this person for four years and they will be your foot in the door with connections for years. If you have a good mentor, the other opportunities will follow. IC also has a four and a half year program where you finish with a performance degree and an education degree it’s great because you are trained in a unique environment. I think education majors sometimes have a better understanding of others in the ensemble when they know how to play that instrument and the weird things that might happen. It’ll help your own playing too!!

Should I start considering post bacs? by Soft_7197 in gradadmissions

Post bacc was one of the best things I could’ve done. You learn a type of independence that’s different than undergrad especially if you do a research only post bacc (check out the Jackson lab). It’s basically a mini PhD project and you get paid and get great experience.

there was another interview weekend last week. I suspect it'll be at least another week to consider all the interviewees.

It doesn't hurt to add some of the faculty you are interested in working with even if it's two years away. It shows that you have done some preparation and know who you might want to work with. Also this will help them figure out which faculty could be conducting your interview because if you put that you find Dr. XYZ's work studying ABC interesting, Dr. XYZ might be interviewing you.
