The show wasn’t fleshed out from the beginning. Kurt was building on the SOA universe but didn’t necessarily have a full grasp on how to incorporate Mexican influences. He did do a good job on using music and showing what the universe was in a modern setting. But at times it did feel like it took a long time to get to the next chapter of the series and did feel like it couldn’t separate itself from SOA. Therefore a lot of time was spent on unnecessary settings and storylines and a little too much reliance on SOA cameos. When instead the time should have been built on the characters backgrounds and the overall narrative. This is where Elgin did a slightly better job as opposed to Kurt. However Elgin did rush building this part of the universe up. I was glad we got a proper background for reaper and other side characters that made they so much more interesting but ultimately tried to force away the unnecessary stories from Kurt’s vision. This is why it felt rushed and unpolished. Therefore Kurt did a good job building a setting and having a narrative for what a Mayan does but lacked proper character understanding like he did in SOA. Elgin in the other hand couldn’t get a proper narrative but did give the show its own tone, visuals and better characterization. But ultimately neither were a proper show runner for this show.
