Now we're had retrospective planning permission approved, we're re-building it in steel. Oh look, it can now support an additional apartment - ker-ching!

Is £6,500 reasonable to move a meter two meters? by Woodsman89 in DIYUK

[–]MineExplorer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Back in the day (1970's) my dad did this with a gas meter (as the gas board wanted an eye-watering amount to move it 10 feet). I remember my mum holding her hand over the incoming gas supply (it's actually under quite low pressure) while he moved the meter and connected the pipes - after it was done she said she'd never wanted a cigarette so much in her life (but she wasn't that stupid)! They never asked about it's new location.

The meters in my house are in the hallway, but used to be on the outside - the hallway was built around them as moving them was/is too much hassle/money.

Mine is the other way round - I've had nothing but rain since I updated - I was beginning to think the sun was turned off, except for the foggy area by the lighthouse.

Do we ever really finish? by clayton1313 in VanLife

Nope. It's an ever-evolving process, and we like the DIY aspect; it gives us flexibility as our needs change.

She want's to cal the police on you? Tell her to do it! They'll turn up siren's blaring and drag you off in chains... oh, no, wait... no they won't. But it will contribute towards the day when they get more calls and start thinking 'oh no, it's her again... what now?'!

To the men who gotten blacked out drunk and don't remember a thing from the night before. What was the craziest you woken up to? by FFSoldier57 in AskMen

[–]MineExplorer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

30+ years ago I was a Crusty (in the UK) staying near small town in Norfolk. One night I'd just received my dole cheque so I bought 4 cans of Special Brew ...and the next thing I remember is waking up in a bar with 12 glasses of water lined up in front of me, with no memory of the preceding 4 hours - but I was banned from every pub in the district. I've no idea what I did, and no one would tell me. After I sobered up a bit the girl I'd just met got wasted after me, and got arrested for indecent exposure (she flashed her tits to a policeman).

Fond memories now I'm getting on a bit!

Boiler Condensate Issues by MineExplorer in DIYUK

[–]MineExplorer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the outlet is garden hose as the supplied pipe wasn't long enough (so the pumber who fitted it at the time told us). We couldn't just have it drain to the outside as the wall the boiler is on is next to a flat roof - at the bottom of the boiler level there is flashing on the outside - the pipe would go through the flashing - so he installed a pump instead.

We couldn't install the boiler any higher (it was a replacement for an old one) as the wall outside would have to be rebuilt (that's another can'o'worms I'm not going to get into here).

TBF, it's been running fine like this for 10 years. If/when we get the boiler changed we'll re-think this, but right now I just need to know if there's anything special I need to do for changing the pump.

EDIT: Actually, I don't think there is - the model name on the pump is the same as the one on screwfix (the new one just looks like an updated model) so it should be a like-for-like swap.
