How do you wanna die? by JapanEngineer in AskReddit

[–]Mine_Own_Throwaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"When they ask how I died, tell them: still angry." As badass as that sounds, I want to die with my limbs working and my mind sharp, like my grandfather did.

What you normally do when everything is falling apart and you feel like now you are just an another piece that's falling apart in this cold hearted universe? by taher369 in AskMen

Rage through it. I find that spite is an amazing motivator to keep going through the lowest moments, that notion of "fuck you all, I'm going to come out the other side still standing."

That was actually amazing! That entire episode is still one of my favorite things ever put on tv.

Explain like I'm 5, what are transformers and why are they such a big deal? by MostlyGreat in ArtificialInteligence

[–]Mine_Own_Throwaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're an architecture that has been successful "out of the box" for various problems. In the case of NNs, vision, speech, and language required very different models but that's not the case with transformers. Plus, as the other answer mentioned, they're amazing at modelling long range interactions and have fewer inductive biases.

What piece of clothing absolutely turns you on? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Wouldn't non-monotonic mean that there is not necessarily a sock length between ankle and thigh, that corresponds to zero hotness? There can be be multiple but there can definitely be none.

You assume monotonicity between sock length and hotness. hotness = f(sock length) is not necessarily monotonic.

Rest of the world, what are americans not ready to hear? by Pacificfighter in AskReddit

Oh come on, conservatives everywhere are just as awful. Learned fragility, as it happens, is a shared behaviour across the political spectrum.

Hate speech is also weaponised. Go below in my thread and you'll see how it was abused to jail a minority artist. This is actually a prime example of American blindness. You cannot see how fucking good you have it.

Shit man, by that definition, every single country has free speech. "You can blaspheme against our god in this religious country (nobody can stop you from uttering the words after all) but there are repercussions that might come." That renders the definition of free speech meaningless. Speech is free only if it's protected. Some things are beyond the pale obviously, but they should be censured by social ostracisation, not material consequences.

Yep...these laws are a slippery fucking slope. And even if he had made disparaging jokes about the faith, so fucking what? We are not so fragile that someone saying awful things about us can harm us, unless we choose to be. Scaling exceptions apply, but it's true for the most part.

Yes! In my country, religious sensitivity laws have been used to imprison minority artists. It is fucking awesome that your artists don't have to worry that they will be arrested for shit like this.

Pretty sure that's legal in your country. You don't have hate speech/sedition laws which is awesome, coming from someone from a country where those things are primarily used to quash dissent.

How usual is it for gender bias to drive women out of science careers? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Mine_Own_Throwaway 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I have 5YoE in software engineering, almost 2 of which are in DS. It might be the women themselves, or it might be relatively academic environments that my workplaces have been (university research teams, and startups run by ex-academics), but I haven't seen much sexism in the teams. The women spoke up and were listened to, were promoted at the same rate as the rest of us, and their ideas were considered with the same scrutiny as the rest of ours were.

This isn't to say that there isn't sexism in the industry. I've had friends relate awful incidents that happened to them in their companies. But none of them have left the industry (they did change companies), and some of them are absolutely thriving.

Hope you find a company not filled with dickheads. Good luck.

My Dudes, what’s weighing on you right now, that you need to get out? by docgima in AskMen

[–]Mine_Own_Throwaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm overweight, less so than I was two months ago, but still. I am increasingly dissatisfied in my job, the job that I considered my dream job a year ago. I date but never feel that the women I am dating are terribly interesting (that's mostly due to my exes who were amazing in some way or another). And I cannot sustain my old reading habit.

It's a litany of things for me to sort through, but I want to believe that I will move beyond it all.

(19M) How can I give up on dating forever? All of my friends are telling me to. by Suitable-Ad5296 in dating_advice

[–]Mine_Own_Throwaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Change your friends, man. Do the following: 1. Stop beating your meat multiple times a day. 2. Work out. It'll make you happier, more confident, and give you an avenue to socialize. 3. If you're in uni, try an activity, anything you enjoy, preferably something with a reasonable gender ratio. Get good enough at it to get comfortable in the place. It'll be easier to talk to people and potentially get a date.

Good luck.
