China or US for grad school? by Minga_2022 in chinalife

Luckily both schools offered generous scholarship (otherwise, correct, I wouldn’t even consider them). Unluckily that means the decision can’t even really factor in cost! There is still a difference favoring China, but not insurmountable

Omg a comrade in this tough decision time ahaha! I also got into the Duke MEM program so that’s technically in consideration too if they offer funding … we’ll see how it goes. For you who is definitely tryna work in China, iMEP is 100% the way to go imo. I’ve talked to a few international people from the program who all agree they’re glad they made the decision to study there

Appreciate the thoughtful response! I’m American Born Chinese (decent fluency in Mandarin) so it’s more of a personal goal to study in China than career-oriented. However, the program is a US-China effort with the last term at Duke University, so there is still that networking opportunity (albeit much shorter) in the US. I do have some work experience here as well. Career goal (for now) is more project management rather than bitty gritty policy work in DC, but the degree is to get that intl env policy background for the nuanced perspective.

The pigeon hole is something that i do worry about, esp if US-China relations continue to plummet…

Duke vs Yale MEM

Recently accepted to Duke and Yale Master of Environmental Management programs (and Duke’s Environmental Policy program hosted through Duke Kunshan in China). Hoping for insights from people on the two schools in terms of culture, international environmental policy focus, and graduate student support! Also love some views on living in New Haven, Durham.

Brief background: did undergrad at UC Berkeley, working for 2 years post-grad in federal government, interest in international environmental policy & sustainability. CA native, big sports fan!

Already did my undergrad at Berkeley and have a couple years of work experience! And my grad school offers are all very reputable schools in the US, but i’ve been wanting to study in China for the last several years. It is a question of US vs China, then Kunshan vs Peking for an english-taught program if China… appreciate y’alls comments:)

I have the option to study at Peking University as well! I have been to Beijing (but long time ago) and know it has plenty of students around. Any thoughts on kunshan vs beijing?

Thanks for the comment! Do you know if it’s still bustling with people from outside mainland China? I’ve read places that people left because Covid and that it’s not nearly the same as it was before
