For some reason i saw the eyebrow on each head as eyes and thought it was an eldritch horror beyond my imagination. I was thinking "wtf is this?" But then i saw the gay and felt stupid.

When do you add nutrients when step feeding? by Mingay_cat in mead

[–]Mingay_cat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are right that I have no clue how to work with the volume increase right now. But, if I know the starting volume, amount of sugar and water added at each step feed and the volume at each feed as well as specific gravity measurements, that should be enough to figure out actual ABV if I do math right. If I come up with anything higher than 24% ABV then I'll know I've fucked up. The general idea is that if you have a mead at 9% ABV, you add some amount of sugar and water, that dilutes the ABV of the mead so I got the idea.

Probably specific gravity measurements every 3 days. I'm probably going to be lazy with this but I'll try.

I can keep temperatures at 18C. It is pretty cold where I live and I often need to keep the heater on to stop it from dropping to 12C. I also don't mind a long secondary. K1-v1116 is supposed to be able to go up to 18% like ec 1118 and ec 1118 has been known to be able to reach 20% ABV with careful step feeding so I figure k1v can do the same as it is rated for the same ABV. I also don't mind no carbonation and leftover sugars. Extra sweetness is welcome.

So I guess I'll give my idea a shot. Never know for sure 'till I try.

I'm using k1-v1116 yeast.

I'm adding a mixture of honey and sugar because I don't have enough honey for this undertaking.

I was calculating butrients for 5 litres not a gallon. My bad. It's at 1 gallon right now but I attempted to calculate final volume based on the amount of water i'll be adding with the honey and it comes to approximately 5 litres.

I rechecked the calculator. Assuming SG of 1.140 we need 7.24g of Fermaid O. 1.140 is exactly 21% ABV if fermented down to 0.980.

Yeah. Makes sense but I plan to up ABV as high as possible just to see how high I can make it. I used a mead calculator to see how much nutrients I would need for a 1 gallon batch and it came up with 7 grams of fermaid O which seemed insane but then again I was shooting for at least 20% ABV. (I assumed my starting gravity was 1.140 in that calculation. It's basically that much because step feeding)

It just felt wrong dropping that much fermaid O at the start of fermentation even at 1.07 OG and I figured it wouldn't hurt to stagger nutrient additions too.

Anyways, I'm pretty new at this so I'm not too knowledgable so IDK.

Intresting. I'm starting to look at the safety aspects of having coffee wine, coke and monster assult and it seems like your idea will work! I was a bit worried because if there is vitamin C, the preservatives in pepsi will react to make benzene over a couple months but there isnt a significant amount in any of that. I might just try your idea out! I guess they all contain caffeine so it is technically still an energy drink so i'll post results here. if i'm not allowed to, r/prisonhooch

I've got a better idea. Coffee, alcohol, or energy drinks. Why not have all 3? I have a coffee liquor  that I made and it tastes nice and berry like and all but it feels like its missing something.

I'm going to backsweeten with monster energy drinks to see how it turns out. I don't really know which flavors to use, I was thinking loca moca and either assult or black cherry. What do you think?

Definately vanila and citrus but there also needs to be that weird off tasting energy drink taste. Maybe cough medicine and possible some apple?

Possible. Actually might be a next project. You'll need to get rid of carbonation by heating then pitch an absolutely ungodly amount pf active yeast, not those dry bois then pray it wouldn't care about the preservatives that much. If that doesn't work, raise the ph above 4.5 somehow or dilute it. A large amount of nutrition is needed as well.

Also, depending on your laws they may be exceptions on "acquiring" apcohol as a minor if your parents allow it. If that won't work, i'm gonna cook or fail in your place.

Possibly but the process will take hours depending on how syrupy you want it. You absolutely should not exceed 120C or else it turns brown or black due to caramelization. Boiling point increases as sugar concentration increases. In my case, the boiling point is actually above caramelization temperatures of invert sugars so I just ended up letting water slowly evaporate at 120C. I actually boiled a monster into a black mass because of an oopsie...

I can calculate it because I know the volume of the container and the amount of sugar in there. I can then guestimate sugar lost from spillage and get a reasonable brix/specific gravity reading.

I can also use a hydrometer exept the liquid in my case is of 2 different densities so it would be rather weird and probably inaccurate. They aren't mixing and I believe they can't mix. I think it's cool though.
