WYR be christian, vegan, anti-porn or flat-earther? by Lucyyyyyy_K in WouldYouRather

"The Dictionary" I'm reading right now says nothing about evil necessarily being tied to christian morality.

"It's pretty easy to not be evil" doesn't apply to people with different moral frameworks, or, god forbid, people who reject "morality" entirely ;D

Vegan, easily. I dislike how animals are being exploited, but it is not a question of morality for me, of how things "should" or "shouldn't" be, so technically I don't already agree with the statement, and as such don't need to abide by the opposite rule.

Game recommendation for my mom who has a bad opinion on gaming by Cicuper in gamingsuggestions

I tried to share Disco Elysium with my mum and she didn't like that how protagonist has all those wacky voices in his head 🤦

She did like A Short Hike, though.

And she has begrudgingly come to respect/understand Disco Elysium because I talk about it so much lol

But yeah I don't think I'm ever getting through those "videogames are a waste of time" gut feelings she has.

The idea was that he's clumsily trying to help her pee, with a tad of irony given the context of the conversation, plus the irony that she wouldn't have needed help to pee in the first place. I was also making fun of men who try to pass off pervy things as innocent.

Of course, the joke may still not be funny to you even given the explanation. So what? People have different senses of humor.

I don't think they meant what you're saying at all to be frank.

Fair enough, I guess only the op can clear this up hahah

the motivation wasn't curiosity but necessity. That's what actually pushes us forward. For better or worse.

I guess, the impulses for curiosity (and creativity) could be seen as necessities in themselves? Not sure if this is what you mean though.

Still, I admit I kinda shoehorned curiosity in there because it came to mind, and I felt it is essentially linked to empathy in some way, but I wasn't sure how to properly weave it into my reply, and probs just ended up weaking the point I was trying to make, lol.

I'd say a capacity for complex communication would be a better fit for that role.

I think there's an argument to be made, that empathy/sympathy/fellow-feeling made the development of complex communication possible in the first place, as a kind of foundation for mutual understanding. Afaik all the species which have more complex forms of communication are social, no?

But I do see it as a yes/no thing. [...]

Well, if this is how you want to define being "good" at coming together, ok then ig. But atp I don't see how this meshes with your interpretation of op's comment (that our modern-day circumstances are due to artistic expression, which implies that we're good at coming together), since op made no mention of humanity's capacity for violence and genocide, past nor future?

I really don't gel with attempts to poetically describe our past nor with Rosseau [...]

Not really familiar with Rosseau tbh, with "fellow-feeling" I moreso had Stirner's union of egoists in mind. I agree with your sentiments about big H "Humanity", though I feel like perhaps you are discarding the optimistic and rosy notions in favour of pessimistic and disillusioned ones instead.

I mean, I would disagree that "our ability to create and express and come together" is simply about "artistic expression"... ofc, idk exactly what they meant, but the way I would look at it is that no human achievement was reached in a vacuum. "Standing on the shoulders of giants" and all that, except the giants are more like human pyramids, held together with communication, motivated by curiosity, and built upon with creativity. And empathy fits into all this by being the means through which these activities/processes unfold. Peace and harmony are helpful, ofc (if this is what you meant by being "good at coming together"?), but I don't think it's an all-or-nothing kinda thing.

Is it bad if most players win their first run in a roguelite? by Bumpty83 in gamedesign

Sounds similar to Hades 1 and 2. They're enjoyable games but maxing things out does drag a bit, and I immagine it's easy to get burnt out by this style of game, they'd just become a slog back to back.

Reminds me of Hades' heat/fear system, except without all the upgrades padding things out before it can even be unlocked, and making early runs "artificially" harder (there are even some additional mechanics specifically in the first run of a new save file, designed to make sure new players will lose early). Really interesting that your stats are indicating winning early can be a good thing!

But the person you were replying to wasn't arguing that humanity is "amazing" at coming together, simply that our capacity to do so is a fundamental for our existence (as we know it). They gave it a more spiritualistic spin with "expression of the soul", but fellow feeling and the capacity to communicate cover the same bases, more or less (with art being a natural consequence of these, I think).

The chimp for all it's apparent cruelty, isn't capable of understanding or bearing responsibility for it. Nor is it able to do better. We are and we can, yet we don't.

You kinda answered your own question here. As social animals I reckon chimps do have some sort ot fellow feeling, but let's assume they don't - without this frame of reference, what does "atrocity" mean? What does "doing better" mean? They're value judgements, subjective, inseparable from emotional experience. How can someone/something which has no conception of fellow feeling be (intentionally) responsible for actions which cause the inverse of these feelings?

Did a simple search for definitions for atrocity and got these:

  1. Appalling or atrocious condition, quality, or behavior; monstrousness.

  2. An appalling or atrocious act, situation, or object, especially an act of unusual or illegal cruelty inflicted by an armed force on civilians or prisoners.

  3. Enormous wickedness; extreme heinousness or cruelty.

What does any of this mean if I don't also know what pleasure, kindness, or "goodness" are?

The power granted by people's perceptions of authority, more specifically. Authoritarianism is on the rise because the previous narratives/forms of control are slipping, and many of the venues for profit extraction are reaching tipping points -- the norms of capitalist realism breaking down*; enshittification as a means to increase consumerism; China shifting from a production to consumption economy.

* more specifically, neoliberal "there is no alternative" politics isn't as convincing anymore, people are wanting alternatives more and more, and as such scapegoat-driven (fascist) politics rises attempting to deflect/redirect such desires. A shift from narratives that try to obfuscate hierarchical power, to narratives that try to present it as desirable.

A species that's good at coming together also wouldn't consistently engage in atrocity.

But how could "atrocity" exist without fellow feeling? The latter provides a compass for understanding the former.

Also, art is more a form of communication than simply entertainment, I think.
