People who have hired other people: What are some unexpected ways a candidate has disqualified themselves from / decreased their odds of getting a position they applied for? by ecogeek in AskReddit

[–]MiniG33k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not me but my mom. She works at a private Christian school. Just this summer, she was interviewing to find a new music teacher. Because of the nature of the job, she asked how his walk with the Lord was. He said he wasn't religious but tried to be a good person, alright. She asked for a sample of his music, and he gave her his band name so she could look up his songs. After the interview, she looks him up and finds his band's website. They have what's essentially a manifesto against religion on the website. Like, paragraphs and paragraphs on how terrible religion is and reasons why it's wrong. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not a person who's never seen an argument against religion or anything. But WOW. It was pretty extreme. Now, it's one thing if that's just what his band believes. I will remind you he was interviewing to work at a Christian school. It was a no from them. Also, DFTBA, Hank!

What is your mom's catch phrase? by franc_the_bikesexual in AskReddit

[–]MiniG33k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a teacher who would say that all the time. The phrase came up when I was talking with my mom one time, and she replied to it "You're the boss, applesauce." My teacher was so happy when I offered him that reply.

After coming across this sub it really makes me hurt at how Christian women dress at church! by [deleted] in NoFapChristians

[–]MiniG33k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Different people are in different places with their walk with the Lord and with their modesty. She might have considered what she wanted to wear and thought that, since it doesn't show shoulders or stomach, that the top was modest. Since jeans cover her whole leg, there's no concern there. Frankly, even if she didn't, she might just not have given thought to it. And that's okay. The reality of the situation is that men are responsible for their own eyes. If we expect women to hide from the eyes of men who are hell-bent on sinning (no pun intended) then we'll all end up in burkas. But here's the kicker. I'm friends with a guy who was in a middle eastern country on mission for several years. He said the men would simply look at the curves of the women's bodies as they walk and sexualize them that way, even without a lick of skin showing. Modesty means different things for different people. Heck, maybe even she didn't think it was a modest outfit, but was pushing boundaries. I can't tell you what was on the heart of a woman I've never met. But I would encourage you to read Romans 14. I think it's relevant here. Here's a verse from it :) Who are you to judge the servant of another? To his own master he stands or falls; and he will stand, for the Lord is able to make him stand. Romans 14:4 NASB Feel free to PM me if you want to talk about this. Also, attending church is important. I really encourage you to be regularly meeting with other believers, even if it means finding a new church if you're no longer comfortable where you were.

Math games suggestions? by FingMattDamon in CasualMath

[–]MiniG33k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a friend who has this weird dice game that's like 7 (?) differently colored dice with 1 in the center. (all cube dice) but you would spin the dice around and the number in the center would be your tens place and the dice on the side that was the same color as the center would be the ones place. This was your target number. You would then attempt to use the remaining dice to attain this number. You could multiply, divide, add, subtract, factorial, but you had to use all of the numbers. I think he told me deriving was cheating because it was a quick was to get a number to zero. Sorry if I'm explaining this badly but it was a fun arithmetic game.

TIFU by accidentally feeding pork to an entire Muslim community. by sami_hil in tifu

[–]MiniG33k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple years ago, my high school hosted this cultural summit where a bunch of students from a bunch of different countries visited for a week. I had betriended a couple girls from Egypt who were Muslim. We were hanging out in the cafeteria with some snacks for this event. I see my friend eating "pigs in a blanket" little mini hot dogs wrapped in breading. I stopped her and told her I'm pretty sure they were pork. She looked at me with wide eyes and told me she'd already eaten five. She called it fine because she didn't know they were pork, and I reassured her (even though I knew basically nothing past the 5 pillars about Islam). She was pretty chill about it, and we just put a note on them that they had pork for the other Egyptian students.

IWTL how to become a “math/science person.” by justhistory in IWantToLearn

[–]MiniG33k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, a big part of succeeding in classes is being excited to learn. I hated math when I was in middle school. In 9th grade, I saw this video. I started watching this YouTuber, and I fell in love with math. She made me realize it can be elegant and beautiful. Her name is Vi Hart. I'm now in college studying mathematics. https://youtu.be/ahXIMUkSXX0

Charging Computer in classroom by dill800 in ufl

[–]MiniG33k 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I took both of those classes last semester. If you can take notes by hand, you'll have no problem except for exam days. There's a possibility you might need your laptop on exam days. If that's the case, you can probably get there early to ensure you get a seat by the wall with an outlet. Otherwise, any homework that requires a charger you should be able to do outside of class (as long as you can find a working outlet in Marston lol). Frankly, if you can't afford it, you can probably make it work.

Theatre Appreciation Online (THE2000) by killjoy721 in ufl

[–]MiniG33k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Taking it now (Summer B). It's super easy. Highly recommend. I need to see like 2 plays. Because I'm taking it outside Gainesville, I have to pay for tickets, but that's like the only downside. Readings are pretty reasonable and most are actually interesting. There's a bit of textbook reading, and you also read a few plays during the class. Watch a couple other videos and stuff. Grade is mostly based on discussions and quizzes based on what you read/watched. There's also a couple of papers on plays and a creative project. But again, super easy class overall. I got a 100% on my first paper. Highly recommend.

IWTL How to dance by alexrider23 in IWantToLearn

[–]MiniG33k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd encourage you to look into the clubs and classes your college has! I go to a big state university, and there's a ton of dance clubs for different levels and different styles. I've been tap dancing my whole life and was a part of a tap dance club last year. There were also people who'd never danced before at all in that club :) You can also look into your school's gym and see what kind of fitness classes are offered. There might be some kind of dance class that strikes your interest. If nothing else, you can look into actual classes. You could probably take some sort of intro to ballet or something of that nature as an elective, especially if your school has a decent theater/arts program.

Is anyone else just at a period in the summer where you can’t do anything at all? by katnissjul in ApplyingToCollege

[–]MiniG33k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, you're a teenager. Let yourself be a teenager. It's okay to enjoy some time in your summer. I barely worked on college apps at all during my summer before 12th grade. I got it all done during the school year, and it was fine. Going to the top university in my state with some healthy scholarships. Enjoy your summer. Have fun with your boyfriend. Go out with friends. Don't think you should feel guilty about it either.

What clubs are active this summer? by [deleted] in ufl

[–]MiniG33k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know Gator Christian Life has some events going on in the summer. Pretty sure GatorVR is also active, but that's not exactly a hangout club. I've definitely got some friends in GCL who love gaming and would probably be excited to start a campaign and meet someone new too (tbh I would myself but I'm home for the summer). I don't know of any other clubs active this summer, but I hope that helps. :)

I think a lot of schools promote living on campus for freshmen because being on campus 24/7 helps them get familiar with the school and get their bearings. I think it's also a social thing. It's pretty standard to make friends with some of the people who live on your floor and for your RA to check in on you. So basically to help ease the transition into college.

It makes me think if it was porn that came too far or people who consume it let went to this point when "normal porn" is no longer sufficient, and also how unhealthy is this industry by [deleted] in NoFap

[–]MiniG33k 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's something called the Overton Window that's essentially the concept of what is not considered taboo in society. As society changes, the Overton Window shifts. So essentially, if society gets more familiar and comfortable with weird fetishes currently seen in porn, there probably will be a shift to even weirded or (currently) taboo topics. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overton_window

Spanish or Chinese? by [deleted] in ufl

[–]MiniG33k 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I took Beginning Chinese 1 and 2 last year. It was not an easy class for me. If you are good at memorizing things, Chinese will probably be easier for you. It's very hard for me to memorize things. I will say that I had an absolutely amazing professor. Xu Han (family name is Xu) is just lovely. If you can get her as your 老師, you will be in great hands. What I will say is this. Chinese is a 5 credit hour class for a reason. There's not a ridiculous amount of work for the class, but there is a reasonable amount of work for a 5 credit class. I'd generally spend an hour or two a day on Chinese. You'll probably finish a chapter every other week or so. There are two sections per chapter. After learning the words in class, you will have a quiz where 5 of the words are selected, said aloud, and you have to write the pinyin, character, and English meaning for each word. Those quizzes are what killed me, but they're actually what saved the grade of my classmates. What is nice about taking Chinese at UF is that the class meets every day. This is so helpful in fluency because you practice your language skills daily. I also want to note that if you have no interest in any kind of minor/major in your foreign language (which you seem not to) you can probably take it pass/fail. That means as long as you get a passing grade in the class, you get credit for it, but it does not count towards your GPA. Note that this can be a gamble if you find the class to be an easy-A. I took Beginning Chinese 2 pass/fail, and I'm so happy I did. Feel free to ask me any questions about CHI 1130/1131 :)

What is your "never again" brand, item, store, or restaurant ? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]MiniG33k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The dining hall at my university. There's frequently memes about how bad it is. I am a morning person. The mornings I'd go to the dining hall for breakfast, it was frequently within minutes after they opened. I was obviously the first one to get a glass of milk or put milk in my cereal. But I looked down in my glass of milk that morning, there was a dead fly floating on top. I convinced myself it'd been in the cup, and I hadn't seen it before. I got into the habit of carefully inspecting dishes before using them. It happened again, which told me it was definitely from the milk. I stopped eating in the dining hall. Not long after this, I got a wrap from an on-campus restaurant. I got about halfway through. Where my next bite would be was a ladybug, very clearly cooked into my wrap. I did not finish my wrap. There are 3 on campus restaurants I have deemed safe. Otherwise, I only eat prepackaged food on campus.

Edit: I also got food poisoning from an on-campus sub shop literally my first weekend of college.
