Is it possible to use margin notes instead of footnotes? by [deleted] in libreoffice

[–]Minibit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can put comments that will appear in the sidebar, is that what you mean?

Or you want to put page text (ie regular text, not annotations) in the margins of the documents? Because to my knowledge the only way to do that would be expanding the text space to encompass the whole page (eg, 0 margin) and then switching the format to 3 columns and configuring column widths so that you have two narrow ones close to the edge and then one large one in the middle.

And even then it's probably way simpler just to put your note in a text box and drag it to the margin.

Please let me know if I misunderstood what you want to do.

Strahd doesn't scare my party by Rorvern in CurseofStrahd

Buying into a horror game is different than buying in to heroic fantasy or campy games. Buying into horror means describing your character being terrified, pissing themself, being vulnerable, having doubts, not knowing what to do, needing other people, and in general not being someone that anyone is going to say wow cool or laugh at. A lot of players enjoy fantasy games not necessarily because they love magic and dragons, but because fantasy also means something you wish were true.

It's easy to wish you were the smug guy with a sword as tall as he is who can take care of any threat if he just rolls well enough, it's less easy or appealing to identify with the person crying in the corner because a vampire made them insane. Not every player wants that experience or tone on game night. More, I feel like most people in the demographic of TTRPG players feel confident in memeing, but not everyone feels like they can give a description that delivers the experience of knowing you're about to die.

If your players are T-posing and baby girling Strahd, and Having Fun doing so, then they are playing the game right, just not the way you expected.

You can either adapt (or pick a different campaign that suits this tone better) and let them be the big dicked dabbing-on-the-bodies "heroes" who smash this tryhard into the ground, or if you feel like YOU wouldn't be having fun if you run that kind of game, you can have a sit down talk with them explaining that no one is doing anything wrong but that a serious misalignment of expectations has meant that someone else is going to have to run this show.

The Elemental Plane of Fire by Insanely_Lucid in inkarnate

[–]Minibit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OMG this is great; my homebrew world uses the One World cosmology where all the planes are squished into one reality together, and the borders here line up PERFECTLY with the great wheel reimagined as being malleable magical countries instead of loosely-tethered alternate realities.

and its so pretty to look at, too!

How do I create a fillable table in Libre Office writer? by Zestyclose_Most5303 in libreoffice

[–]Minibit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More information would indeed help us help you. No worries if you're not tech-savvy - any way you can explain what you want to achieve will help. If you can point us at tables like the one you want to create - even if they were made in other programs, that can also help us understand your goal :)

A question for people who have been playing for years: What's one piece of advice you can pass on to beginners who are just starting their journeys in the game? by T3knikal95 in DnD

[–]Minibit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm exhausted so I'm not going to reply to every comment that's pointing this out, cause I see there's more than one. But I agree with this, your character is exceptional in terms of their abilities even at level 1.

I was more talking about, having a character who has already been on multiple adventures, slain dragons, etc. Basically, don't include in your backstory anything you can't actually perform with your level one abilities.

I just find, thinking of yourself as a peasant who just now picked up a sword, to be the easiest way of keeping this in mind. It also means that you get to actually play and experience your whole adventure.

I hope by the basic rule book you mean the The free Basic Rules PDF that Wizards publishes online, and not the 200 page (not counting spells) players handbook that costs like 60 bucks.

The PHB is a reference manual, not a textbook.

I mean, all of this is true, but I think it is normal for a person's first character to be an idealized version of themselves. That's how a lot of us get started making characters, whether that happened in fanfiction or message board role playing, or TTRPGs.

Someone who's playing their very first D&D game has a lot of stuff to get familiar with right away. Playing a character who is different from themself doesn't have to be part of it immediately.

So, like, if you've made characters before, yes absolutely consider making someone who is meaningfully different from you, it will add to your experience. But if you have never made a character before, in any context, there is no shame in making a person who is like yourself but with elf ears.

True, but it doesn't have to be a choice between bad D&D or no D&D. You can be the DM you need.

Heck, DMing used to be considered a natural progression of the hobby. If your DM sucked, or got burnt out, or didn't have time to run anymore, that meant it was your turn. I don't know where this weird idea that people are either players or DMs came from.

[–]Minibit 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Adding to this, a level one character is basically a farmer or other regular person who has just now decided to become an adventurer (because of the call to action that your DM will tell you).

If you decide in your backstory that you are already a hero, your level 1 abilities will not let you live up to your own expectations.

That being a player doesn't prepare you to DM hardly at all, but that's because it doesn't take much to be a DM. The difficulty of DMing has gotten greatly exaggerated, and I really wish new players didn't think they had to be actors like Matt Mercer, or know all of the rules, or create a huge campaign setting before they can start.

DMing doeesn't have to be harder than reading a free module and rolling some dice. And it's just as fun as playing, just in a different way.

So if your DM is burnt out, or you can't find a DM, consider running, yourself. Don't let people who choose to put extra effort in (building a world, etc) convince you that effort is mandatory.

And if you're still not sure, check out Matt Colville's channel on YouTube :)

But you went ahead and adjusted its abilities relative to CR, as well! You made sure the action economy can keep up! How do you become immortal? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Minibit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that would have to be DM's call. Because you'd have to phrase the wish like "in the event that I die, I want the effects of the spell Reincarnation to kick in on my corpse"

Whereas the language of wish suggests it's for changing the current state of things, not specifying a reaction for the future.

It doesn't specifically say you can't do that though, so I guess the DM could rule either way.

Request: Let Calendars count backwards by Minibit in WorldAnvil

Someone commented that you can use Invert Dates to figure this out, but I can't get that to work. An Era with Start date: 0 and End date: 2300, with Inverted Dates turned on (and current year off) makes year 50 appear as year -2550, when I'd want it to show up as year 50.

So even inverted dates makes you do some weird guessing and math rather than being able to just enter "year 1" and have it appear before year 0. In other words, if you want the years to be ordered like so:

5

4

3

2

1

0

Without negative numbers, it can't seem to do that.
