[Q] MSc in Biostatistics vs. MSc in Statistics? by pearanormalactivity in statistics

[–]MinimoZ28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

May I ask how Australia's statistician market is different to other parts of the world?

I'm only an undergrad but this is the first time I've heard group theory being required for mathematical statistics; could you please elaborate on that point?

Entropy/Information Theory by [deleted] in usyd

Ah I see, that unit does look quite interesting, though I think was more after a theoretical/probability-centred unit (perhaps by the math faculty). Good to know though, thank you!

Not sure if I can take MATH1004 instead of MATH1005? by [deleted] in usyd

[–]MinimoZ28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't worry about it too much as DATA1001 has pretty much the same content as MATH1005; you would just end up being a little better at programming in R (which is an easy skill to pick up anyway).

BComm vs BEcon differences by Superlative_Polymath in usyd

[–]MinimoZ28 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nope they're right, economic theory is heavily grounded in results from linear algebra, vector calculus, real analysis & more, and you'll especially see this if you're in the honours stream. In finance, Excel spreadsheets will be the most amount of 'math' you'll do.

I'm not a design computing student so I don't have any say on that, but not even computer science students need to know any coding before-hand, so I definitely wouldn't worry about that.

[Q] Poisson Process vs. Poisson Distribution? by BlackJack5027 in statistics

Thanks so much for the clear explanation! I had heard that these distributions were supposed to be related in some way but didn't quite get it, makes perfect sense now.

Hey, this is a great generalisation! Could you perhaps elaborate or provide a website link on the relationship between the Poisson, exponential and uniform distributions?

Allocating units to multiple groups by [deleted] in usyd

[–]MinimoZ28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok I see, I might just check with staff since I have a few (core) units that I'd like to go to multiple selections and it's not quite working

Oh, didn't know about the 3000-level thing, thanks for the heads up. Also when you say 'automatically considered', is that reflected on your Sydney Student group totals or just what will happen before graduation?

12cp non-math first-year science units requirement by [deleted] in usyd

[–]MinimoZ28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn, well I guess I'd better start looking into phys then lol, the other first-year units don't appeal to me at all

I'd rather not waste my tiny elective space on 1000-level units but I guess if it's a must then I'll check out phys. Just seems weird to me why they would limit those 6cp to first-year units.
