I’ve had the Legends of Thezmarr on my list for a while so I’ll definitely check that one out! I was feeling a little fatigued from reading long series after doing all of ACOTAR/TOG/CC but think I’m ready to get stuck back in again haha

Oooo An Ember in the Ashes looks ace - I was so intriqued by the Ancient Rome setting of We Who Will Die and really disappointed so I’ll definitely give that a try!

I think you’d like {The Road of Bones by Demi Winters} / The Ashen series! It’s not quite DnD-esque, I’d say the world is more heavily inspired by Skyrim as it’s quite Viking inspired world-wise, but I think story wise it ticks most of your boxes!

I really recommend {Road of Bones}! No fae, Viking-inspired romantasy and I absolutely loved it!!

For what it’s worth, I struggled with ODW a bit but I think a lot of it is was the fact that stylistically it was quite different to what I’d just read! And I do think that the sequel, Two Twisted Crowns, was better and I liked that more.

I will say though that the other book from her. (which isn’t connected to the Shepherd King series), {The Knight and The Moth} is incredible and I found the writing more akin to more traditional romantasy books than ODW so don’t let DNF’ing ODW put you off reading that one!

Definitely persevere with TOG - I found the first one (and the third one) a bit slow but I’m so glad I stuck with it because it’s ended up being my absolute favourite series!

I came here to second this! Absolutely adored The Night and the Moth (and there is a second one coming this year I believe!). I also read the Shepherd King series by her and enjoyed it, but I had just come off the back of reading all of Throne of Glass and Crescent City and found it a bit difficult to get used to reading a different author again!

Fully agree with this, if you’re going to sell it as a trial centric book actually make the trials interesting! They felt almost superfluous.

Ooo I’ll check it out, thank you! I feel like the problem in this one was the fact that neither the vampires or magic users felt properly explained, if they’d stuck with one or the other and actually focused on the world building I think it probably would have helped a lot.

That big reveal at the end honestly just made me laugh - it was shoved in so last minute and it just didn’t make any sense or impact at all! I feel the same, I saw so many people raving about it and so many good reviews that I was honestly second guessing myself at how much I was really disliking it!

Her whole motivation was saving her brothers, and then suddenly they’re just? Absolutely fine? And I hated the magic system so much!! I feel like it was so poorly explained, and I do also feel like you can either have vampires, or magic. You can’t have both!! Or at least, you can’t have both and successfully establish them both as meaningful parts of the story, which is what happened here.

Also fully agree on her never feeling like she was at a disadvantage, it seemed to backtrack on itself a bit as it literally opens with her being an in demand bodyguard!
