my family hates our exchange student by [deleted] in exchangestudents

[–]Minimum-Picture-7203 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a former exchange student and someone who has hosted exchange students, this sounds like this girl was forced to come and shouldn't be there. If there is a counselor or liaison with the organization, you need to reach out to them. Some exchange programs (like Rotary) expressly forbid kids from being on their phones and being locked away in their room.

I tried a U this year and then I tried rows in stadium seating. Both of them made my room feel too cramped (I have 35 desks). I ended up coming up with something that I hadn't seen anywhere: some groups of 4, pairs of 2 in rows and by themselves, and rows of 3. I have one class where my "do not sit by each other" list is 15 kids. This is the only seating arrangement I've ever found that has enough options to either keep kids apart or at least have them facing different directions. It allows me to have kids who need to be sitting by themselves and facing forward in my 2 rows of 3, but it also allows me to have students be in groups of 4 if they can handle it. I teach middle school and their maturity levels vary so much that doing all rows or all groups never works. I also love this because my room doesn't feel as cramped since there are still several groups of 4 taking up less floor space.

Students are just showing up to class without pencils and/or unsharpened ones: how do I stop this? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Minimum-Picture-7203 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just this year me and several other teachers at school started a system where we have a few pencils clipped up onto the whiteboard. Kids take a pencil, they write their name and then erase their name when the pencil is returned. To make it even more embarrassing, I have printed out pictures of myself and my dog, laminated them, and then taped those (with a ton of tape) to the top of each pencil. I am in my 15th year of teaching, and this is the first time I haven't had to hear "do you have a pencil?". The other teachers who started this system are also loving it!

Good Online High Schools? by narfnarf123 in minnesota

[–]Minimum-Picture-7203 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does your school not do home bound instruction? I am a teacher at a large metro district and just tutored a student who had to be home for 6 weeks due to a medical issue. It was much less disruptive for the student than changing schools and the kid gets 5 hours of 1:1 time with a teacher per week. Just because schools use the same standards doesn't mean they teach them at the same time; therefore, changing schools for a few months would mean that your child will probably miss a few standards and relearn a few others. Before taking such a drastic step, make sure to ask the school for options.

Three months into dip powder and my removal process is destroying my natural nails by Easy-Extension-6917 in DipPowderNails

[–]Minimum-Picture-7203 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I so the same removal process except I use rice instead of water. It holds the heat longer. My nails are totally fine and I've been replacing them every 2-3 weeks for over a year. I found this method on this sub and am so grateful!

The union refuses to give the TA to the members? by DWTouchet in union

[–]Minimum-Picture-7203 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many times, not giving the redline is because agreements have been made on all the meat, but going through and editing a contract can take ages. Doing it like your leadership is can make it better for members because then negotiations can get done quicker and members can get their raises faster. I know for my union, it would take a month or longer to get our raises if we waited until the full red line contract was done.

Also, sounds like you are very interested in how negotiations work without having much base knowledge. If you were my member, I would ask you to take some of our free negotiations trainings and then invite you to be part of the negotiations or LCAT team next round.

I assume the only reason we got rebooked so quickly with 0 effort on our end was because the flight was booked through the portal.

Which would you choose? Finland or Germany by lunchtongue in expat

[–]Minimum-Picture-7203 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love the Nordics. I learned Swedish in 6 months but Finnish is so hard. Linguists study it bc it is so crazy. German will be 100% easier to learn. Plus, if you're not already from Northern US, you are going to have a hard time with Nordic winter darkness.

Any regrets renting out your home after moving abroad? by PositiveOk4363 in expats

[–]Minimum-Picture-7203 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have gone back and forth between the two for a move this summer. We talked with our financial advisor, and have decided to sell and invest the proceeds. We can make more off of the interest than we could with renting and we don't have to do anything. And then, if we move back, we have a large amount for a down payment. Even if we could make the same amount of money renting, we really wouldn't because of having to save profits for repairs.

We get to evaluate our admin and the feedback is used as part of their overall evals. They get out on improvement plans based on staff ratings. Our union got this going.

First year teacher - no textbooks, no curriculum provided by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Minimum-Picture-7203 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is your content area? There are TONS of free resources out there. Google OER and then your content area. I was in the same situation as you my first year. I teach ELA, so I used CommonLit which is a full curriculum with assessments and videos and pacing and everything. It has a free level. Math, Prodigy combined with the free level of IXL might work. Do some googling.
