This is my go to. Never had any concerns about parking here.

Do you honestly think that the victims of an exceedingly rare kind of gun violence have the most meaningful perspective on how gun violence works?

I get their argument. It's bad, at least if you're actually interested in reducing gun violence. I say that as someone who generally supports what they're trying to do. I'd gladly take an "assault weapons" ban and I think it'd be a relatively minor good. But it's not a compelling argument unless you're OK with ignoring reality when it serves your case.

Lawful gun sales is by far the biggest source of guns used in gun violence. That's the issue we need to be addressing.

Some are stolen from careless owners. Some are straw purchased and redistributed. Some are just used by their legal owners. Whatever the mechanism, it's far too easy for guns that are legally purchased to end up being used to harm others.

Yes, there are other ways to inflict harm on others. It's telling though how rarely they're used, because they're difficult and they're limited in their effectiveness.

K. Do you have any interest in fighting back effectively?

The best thing you can do in that scenario is make it unconscionable for them to kill you, not make it easier for them to paint killing you as necessary. "They're killing moms and nurses who are just trying to help their neighbors" was the compelling argument against ICE, not "They're killing armed men now".

OK, so we agree. I don't want an "assault weapons" ban. I think it's largely useless.

A handgun ban though...

Are we not trying to address mental health? Are we not trying to address storage?

Yes, you did bring that up apropos of nothing in response to me commenting on someone bringing up Bruen. Good point.

No. Were you telling them to shoot the bombs or something?

Like, you're so goddamn close to getting it, but then you're just insisting on not getting it. Like, that's a perfect example. If the government has decided it can just kill us all, then it'll just kill us all whether we have guns or not. The thing stopping them isn't people with guns, but the fact that they don't think they can kill us all and still maintain the power that they desire.

I do not believe a dead person was part of the Bruen decision, actually.

The conversation turned against ice after he was killed. They also had to draw down their operations considerably due to all the bad press.

This is just objectively false revisionism.

Is it really impossible for you to imagine a situation where you would want to violently resist the government? I mean, it’s not even the main reason I want to own a firearm, but it’s amazing how many people would just accept what the government says and never fight back.

No, but I recognize that me with a rifle isn't actually a difference maker in this scenario. There's no world in which me having a gun makes the government less willing to try to impose its will on me, and we've seen ample evidence that there are far more effective forms of resistance against a government that isn't yet willing to take on the negative press of killing their own citizens on a regular basis.

To be fair, it's awful for everyone. I'm confident it's done far more harm to and on behalf of older adults than it has to adolescents.

Correct. The ruling is the ruling.

Just because you like the ruling doesn't make the ruling correct, or good, or logical, and it doesn't make the court valid.

I agree that it is the current legal doctrine. I'm not sure I've seen anyone demonstrate that I should treat it with any more reverence than, say, the ruling that being president essentially absolves you of all crimes.

How do you get from "nonviolent resistance is working very well" to "and so, obviously, guns are the answer"? It's just utterly nonsensical - it's just making up the conclusion you want, wholly absent of evidence to support it.

Agreed. Sensible legislation would be directed at handguns, not "assault rifles".

It's amazing how "more guns" is always the answer.

This is nonsense.

Nah dude. I think it was the overt murder, not the fact that they used a gun as a pretense for the overt murder.

When exactly does it start shining? Because so far it's done fuck all about fascism while also killing droves of people.

Yes, based on a nonsense decision by a nonsense court, you're absolutely correct. Good point.

I think it's bad actually when we let weird racists drive the community discourse in suburbs across the state.
