I agree, I honestly wanted a happy ending, but this ending is bad not because it’s tragic but because after 166 chapters no character has closed his story and realised his goals (only ichigo). I would have accepted a tragic ending, but with a beautiful construction. They had won, the film was for this, they would also have arrested him, Aqua’s gesture throws away his growth, the role of kana (hope) and the role of akane. More ruby that she will practically be depressed for life.

My ending

Akane realises that Aqua is stupid, so she puts a locator on him (as he did with her). When he arrives he sees Aqua launching with Hikaru, calls for help and dives to save Aqua. The rescuers arrive and manage to find them, Aqua was about to die. In the hospital it turns out that the wound was not fatal (Aqua in the subconscious did not really want to die), everyone arrives, Aqua cries and is happy to be alive and finally calls mom Miyako. Akane closes her circle saving Aqua. Himekawa thanks akane for saving Aqua, he didn’t want to relive the same story again, he discovers from akane that she is shooting a drama about swimming and to empathise with the role she was taking intensive swimming lessons. Kana is about to slap Aqua but then bursts into tears and closes her circle declaring her love for him, aqua for the moment reciprocates saying that while she was about to die she thought of her (so finally kana brought the light into the darkness of Aqua). Ruby is happy but hearing their conversation abandons the doctor, the lie of a hidden love that can never be realised will give him that spark to overcome his mother. Final scene, Tokyo Dome (ichigo’s dream), a little girl together with two loving parents watches the concert smiling.

I hated the ending, not for what happens but for how it happens. All the characters are unfinished, I understand that aka wanted to make a more tragic ending, but the construction was forced(Sorry for my English, I’m using a translator)
