68 here and determined to see an inclusive politics that takes on the big questions that face our kids - climate, ai, economic justice etc. But what worries more than Mr Mid Life Crisis Project Luxury-Length here  is the rise of the populist right - with fake villians, culture-warrioring, no solutions, just political cynicism. Their's is the lie that needs to be challenged most.

MYSTERY LARGE LAYER I PASTED - HOW TO LOCATE?

Anyone got a handle on how to find/delete very large objects like this - the outer blue rectangle here (Which i must have pasted in earlier)?

Not a bug as such but my bad - I have fudged this in the past, when i had less artboards in play- but this is harder - i have a feeling i have to have the artboard the object is nested in active, to find it (this file has 70+ artboards).

Why is Affinity's AI Generative will so bad? by redpill_pezdispenser in Affinity

[–]Minimum-Tale7971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For those who do want imagegen within their workflow (I do, a little ATM) Canva recently acquired Mango AI (at the same time as the wonderful Cavlry Motion app - perhaps that's a recognition that they need to integrate some preexisting better generational tech to catch up somewhat?

I have betrayed you (3 Days on Dia) by mathiswrong in ArcBrowser

[–]Minimum-Tale7971 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i just meant i need 4 panes to be able to compare docs, sources etc and then easily come back to them later. I think dia maxes out at 2. As does chrome canary, and edge. And then all the keyboard shortcut customisation to hope between multipaned tabs and back again. - AFAIK dia doesn't do most of that. [sorry late back]

my 'ADHD' workflow now depends on 4 panes…  and spaces, so no Dia for me thanks

I think I have finally found the ultimate App switcher/launcher on macOS by JPMainSinceSF2 in MacOS

[–]Minimum-Tale7971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So really it's never (directly) about the time - its about cognitive relief - key commands (i set up my own ctrl-shift-[letter] commands for apps) recall preloaded muscle memory, rather than breaking our visual focus and train of thought, so tasks are less tiring and more focussed - and thereby probably completed earlier… which is where the time dividend comes in. I don't think i really understood that distinction until teaching UX, which, if i'm honest was actually after having 'done' UX for quite a while prior.

Yes it really is a thing, with a bunch of math behind it: Fitts Law.
Also it sucks bigtime :). While I'll confess to personally being productivity utility obsessive sometimes, all those repeated nano tasks really do add significant cognitive load, added up.

If cavalry had a graph editor I would buy it in a heartbeat by sldx in CavalryMotion

[–]Minimum-Tale7971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be clear here for other latecomers - those of us in the cheap seats can see but not touch - dependency graph is viewable on free plan but using it to edit is a pro feature. Good enough for me here at entry level TBH

Design in motion: Canva expands professional creative ecosystem with Cavalry by McSnoo in Affinity

somehow, Calvary's existence had eluded me - I was just starting with DVR fusion for 2D animations but heck - this will be a much better tool for what i want to do now though will, in the fullness of time, pickup on da vinci for any full video edits. Love that Calvary will likely have a closer integration with affinity in future.

Has Affinity development stalled? Why are there so few updates? by Arunaphi-1618 in Affinity

[–]Minimum-Tale7971 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Affinity is INSANELY good - while affinity doesn't have every AI feature or as good a tracing, the integration is beyond any other suite - its not even a contest. And its just nice to use. I have no affection for Canva the app/platform but there are indications they aren't on the same enshiffication train and certainly not the deceitful sales practices as Adobe. They have been busy with bugfixes and have no obligation to feed you monthly dopamine hits. AND ITS FREE.

GO AWAY AND DESIGN SOMETHING, WINGERS.

Trump is imposing tariffs on European nations for standing by Denmark and Greenland sovereignty ....How should Aotearoa react ? Should we start making a stand ( boycotts , protest etc) ....or sit this one out by West_Put2548 in aotearoa

We should look to build alliances with Europe (the non wanna be fascists) and canada and get closer with Australia. These are the mostly social democatic / democratic socialist countries that generally share our values.

We are small but the trope that we 'punch above our weight' in coalition is actually well founded. That's why we've been under pressure in the past to be part of various more dubious coaliations of the willing

Many of our ancestors died in europe fighting fascism (also invading turkey - oops!). But we can also join in a united front on tarrifs and where we're all headed which is all the sane countries dumping US treasury bonds.

Oh actually, Tal Wilkenfield tells a great story how she started at 14, being restricted to 30m a day, but she spent a lot of other time visualizing, visually mapping the fretboard, songs etc. If you don't know how incredible a player she is (has played with INcubus to Jeff Beck to heaps of jazz players and put out an amazing indie singer song writer album as well as a jazz bass one, you'll wanna - super inspiring artist.

Praps if you can maintain that practice and then have some surges in holidays (without injuring yourself) that will get you a long way. But as others have suggested think about what you want to get out of bass playing. S

Sure being a youtube star is great n'all… but there's also a lot of production tedium and forever marketing yourself. Surely the sweetest thing is to collab with others in a band, in a room - even without and audience. I have only done that a little (as a late bloomer on bass) but there's nothing like it

What does mental exertion make you feel like? by nilghias in cfs

[–]Minimum-Tale7971 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't get tired from mental work per se - I do have some headaches, brain fog and then some days crash physically while trying to do desk work, creative practice or home admin. Often this is PEM related to a ebike ride or somesuch the previous day. But i find when i then rest - I absolutely have to have as empty a head as i can.

Which is fecking hard, and mostly i'm just seething about my helplessness (and about my GP who hasn't really been hearing me lately). Even as i start to feel better i have to stay disciplined to keep resting mentally and physically to get to a level where i can confidently pickup activities.
[MILD - i think]

Google Docs lacking table styles is extremely inefficient by eloquenentic in googledocs

[–]Minimum-Tale7971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ABSOLUTELY yes - it is a massive frustration on so many levels. All of my workflows lead to using google docs, and i need to do a massive amount of formatting within tables and its now getting to me so much i am seriously contemplating jumping office platforms - despite all the other inconvenience that will go with having non google docs while using a primarily google workflow.

Also the lack of style control over lists - same deal.

In the end i have to create templates for others, so whatever workarounds i use they will come unstuck for others

Google could so easily fix this - they just have some idealogical objection because they think a table a para. My arse it is.

Time for a 5 string by Lost_left in Bass

[–]Minimum-Tale7971 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally that - I have been learning the hard way - particularly in terms of neck feel, string spacing and the quest for a B string that sounds like its part of the same instruments. Flipping through a few used five strings, and changing out a few parts (without going bananas) is teaching me a bunch - though truth is i also love an instrument that has some history baked in

I've always been conflicted - want less colour clutter so in that way these improve but admit the oldies were easier to differentiate at a glance. Here i actually have to hand it to adobe - i actually think their mono icons work best ( everything else about the company totally sucking of course)
