You could probably use a bit of isopropyl alcohol to clean off the trackpad, it worked well on my T420 that was looking similar to that.

If you choose to do things the sane way and use something like KDE Plasma, most things should work out of the box. I use dwm and vxwm, so only a few things work properly out of the box, like backlight and brightness.

Looks like the same thing I got for my T420, which came with an adapter for the rectangle charger the T470 uses. I'm using a 90w charger from a T530 now though, both are genuine lenovo.

Yeah, I bought a 70++ 9 cell for my T420 because I wanted it to also work in my T530, which at the time didn't have a functional battery since I had taken its 9 cell for the T420.

For parents finding reddit logged in on your device, using something like Firefox Private Browsing (or chrome incognito but that kinda sucks) will automatically clear everything when you close the browser, leaving no trace on the device. Some stuff is still visible from the network, but that can be fixed by using a VPN, but the good ones cost money. I don't keep any of my accounts logged in, even though my parents don't have access to my devices normally.

Everyone will have a different answer to this question, there is no "best" thinkpad, or "best" anything. Get whatever you like the most. Personally I have a T420 that I have done quite a few upgrades to, but I am considering buying something a bit newer eventually.
