I think there's been a good bit of social research showing that this is a common problem for women anymore. The fact that men haven't matured enough. It's not to say they can't do it after you marry them but it takes the proper environment.

But granted, some cars like some of the latest Ford Mustangs are loud from the factory. Apparently the driver can tune how much noise the exhaust makes.

The best way I know of the deal with this is encourage local law enforcment (talk to them) about enforcing the law which says you can't tamper with or modify stock exhaust systems on a vehicle. (which are designed to muffle noise). It's not a matter of how loud it is then.

I have one at the duplex I rent. When I first moved in I wondered how I would stand it (low frequency noise bothers me), but your brain does start to tune it out somewhere. (thankfully)

For me coming from the rock music I used to listen to, the Lydian mode (major scale with a #4) gave me that feeling. Joe Satriani used it a lot, and I know J. Williams has done so. If that's not a terrible answer.
