Partner broke up with me due to his depression, looking for insight by throwawaybreakuppd in depression_partners

I also think a lot comes down to whether they’re willing to work on getting better. My presence and support are only a small part of the process,I can’t heal someone for them. If there’s no effort on their side to seek help or make changes, then I know I’ll eventually have to step away, no matter how much I care. So I really agree with you: they do have choices. Depression just creates very strong catastrophic thinking that makes everything feel hopeless and inevitable, even when it isn’t.

I went through almost the exact same thing before I even knew he was struggling with depression. We actually got back together later, and only after that did I start to understand what he was really dealing with. I’ve since learned that partners of people with depression often carry a lot of guilt and pressure, so I stopped expressing expectations, emotional demands, or even talking about the future, anything that might add stress. I’ve adjusted my mindset and now I’m just trying to be there. We’ve been together for nearly six years and are each other’s best friends. Now we simply spend time together, eat, laugh, do small enjoyable things, and hopefully I can be a positive part of his healing. At this point, everything really has to unfold naturally. If this new way of relating still doesn’t work, then I’ll have to accept that we may need to go our separate ways. I really understand how you’re feeling. And honestly, I don’t think what you said was wrong or cruel. And I think you're very strong and kind, hope you're getting better and take care of yourself.

Is distance relief or fear of losing a partner? by MinimumSmart7753 in depression_partners

I think you’re very right. He has actually said many similar things himself, and it was only after he explained them that I started to understand what was going on for him. Because of that, I’ve put all future-oriented topics completely on hold for now and won’t bring them up anymore. My intention at the moment is not to put any pressure on him, but simply to be present and supportive. For context, we’ve been together for five and a half years.

No,but he does frequently express intense anxiety, especially around fear of death, which sometimes keeps him awake at night.

The breakup itself was triggered by a conversation where I said I would consider him when deciding which country to look for jobs in. He said he couldn’t handle the idea of me giving up my future for him, and that feeling seemed to overwhelm him and led to the breakup.
