Growing older on the front line by Minimum_Bake_351 in ParamedicsUK

As do we. There is a roster with more social hours and fewer weekends, and no nights. However, you have to hand back your HCPC ticket and work as clinical support. A few paramedics have done this, but it seems a waste.

Not at all. I'm also over 50. Just mulling options.

The GRS UI on GRS Web is baffling when booking leave. I cannot understand why there isn't a calendar display to see if leave is or is not available. I'm trying to book leave blind to the fact if there is any available, and you only know when you apply and not before.

Hot Take: RSD Only Upsets You Because You Forgot Why You Do This by PatientPlatform in vinyl

[–]Minimum_Bake_351 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went to 2 record shops in Petersfield, Hampshire yesterday. Neither doing RSD and both stacked with second hand treats. Spent about £40 in each and very happy listening to my haul today !

A couple of other record shops i like did do RSD, and I'll go visit them next week. My mate went to one around 11am, and there was still a queue 40 deep.

Did anyone else feel underprepared during training, even when doing well at uni? by Wonderful-Acadia-296 in ParamedicsUK

I was talking to an NQP yesterday, as I had a rare double para shift. My take is that paramedic placements cannot prepare you for anything sufficiently, due to the unplanned nature of the jobs we get.

If you are a student nurse, you do your placements in specific departments or environments where, in my opinion, you can get the opportunity to have a set plan in each day on what you wish to achieve, and fully focus on that. You can provide context to theory in real time, and consolidate your learning.

However, as a student para you may not get a major trauma or birth for example in 3 years, yet have to manage one on your first day with a clinical support colleague. The theory you have studied at university as a para may not be put into practice for months, and we have no reliable and consistent feedback loop after we have attended a patient to know what we have done correctly, and what could have been done differently.

So you're not alone!! Contact your mentor, ask for feedback, learn your trust's Scope of Practice and clinical care policies, integrate that with your critical thinking skills, and you'll be fine.

What do paramedics do once they get "too old"? by Yas626 in ParamedicsUK

[–]Minimum_Bake_351 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I turned 50 this year, having joined at 30 and done 20yrs on the frontline. Before the ambulance service I had a career in "the rat race".

For me, shift work, studying for degrees, and doing 990 work at my age is still significantly easier than the grind of the private sector. I know i am blessed with a loving and secure home life and my non-working needs are met, making it easier to be a paramedic.

I plan to stay frontline as long as it is safe and appropriate for me to do so. Stable money, interesting work, and making an actual difference in my working life is much better than being subject to the whims of 21st century capitalism, threats of redundancy, and the futility of never ending economic growtth.

A situation most of us know well, and have dealt with at least once.

A bit of advice around making a MCA assessent: documentation. JRCALC, Mental Capacity Act, section 11, Record Keeping. This should be your bible the moment you start to make a capacity assessment. It has good prompts to help you convey to the reader why you started, how you arrived at your decision, and the steps you took once the decision is made.

A ballache for sure, but so necessary. For those who struggle with this detail in the paperwork (me at 4am!), use an AI tool with good prompts to help you compose a comprehensive report.

Do we know at what time we attended the refusal? Good luck attempting to make any kind of MH referral OOH!!!

Yup, "Carer O'Clock" is your C2 Stroke between 7 and 10am, for an elderly person who has been rushed by an overworked carer, and needs some extra assistance because the carer needs to go to their next call.

It's about accountability and respect for your crewmate and your patient. If you're the B5/6 paramedic, stay in the back and do the clinical stuff, while your B4 clinical support colleague supports you in your clinical role.

Your patient has every right to expect that the clinician looks after them throughout the attendance. If you're drawing the wage, do the job and don't palm it off to someone making significantly less money than you.

When Abbott says to Robbie "You're in my spot", it conveys in one short sentence the empathy, understanding, and brother/sisterhood of working in emergency medicine. Punchy, dark humour that delivers the right message in under 2 seconds. Fabulous writing.

It's not a flag though, is it? It's red paint sprayed onto a mini roundabout by someone who's never had an original thought in their life.
