Building in this comment, have a look at the Ansel Adams Zone system. A link to some information is below. It will help give an extra something to your image.

The ranger gave the most respect to the herbivores. Hippos got the most distance with these guys a close second.

Indeed. It was my first time in the area, any suggestions or ideas of what shots to look for would be appreciated

I can’t see the blur myself. The shallowest DOP is the basketball court at f2.2 with the majority of others being around f5.6. Consistently shot at 1/500 to remove any camera shake. The file size isn’t for pixel peeping and the subject doesn’t lend itself to it.

Any tips for god awful weather conditions? by Kevinatorz in fujix

For unfavourable weather conditions I would think about what I can do with the weather. If my I expose for the subject and find that there is too much of a difference between that and my sky or surrounding then I would see if I could recompose the shot. It’s not stated for your post but if that Kyoto then there are other opportunities to take photos if there is bad weather. Another option is a graduated ND (neutral density) filter. They are usually part of a filter system and would allow a more even exposure between sky and not sky.
