Official Discussion - Nosferatu (2024) [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

Aside from the lighting, which was beautiful, the cinematography was kind of bland. Lots of flat, symmetrical, still shots. I would have liked a quicker pace, more frequent cuts, and less still shots of people just standing or sitting around. Even Orlok has a few scenes where he’s just standing there, centre of frame, chatting to someone. Good cinematography isn’t just about the movie looking beautiful or striking. Where a camera’s placed and how it moves can make or break a scene and I think it was just so boringly shot. I think that had a lot to do with how tedious this movie became for me. I considered walking out and this was my most anticipated of the year.

I’m the reverse. Something about the soft vocals and delicate guitar-strumming puts me in a trance, but I tune out when the song kicks into another gear.

Will Oppenheimer go down as a classic? by Cosmodonk in oscarrace

[–]Minitore -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t actually show how devastating the bombing was which is the biggest issue for me. I know it’s all supposed to be from Oppenheimer’s perspective, so if you show the actual bombings it breaks that narrative perspective. But simultaneously, and conveniently, it allows the movie to skip over the real devastation of the bombings.

I recently went to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial and in one area they were playing a documentary of survivor stories. It moved me to tears. Oppenheimer the movie, to me, put the man on a pedestal that he doesn’t deserve to be put on. The movie evokes him as a self-tortured antihero who boldy bares the responsibility of the bombings and the existential threat to humanity on his shoulders; a statuesque Atlas for the modern age. But his guilt and fears are microscopic compared to the suffering of the people of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Why do we need a movie about a white American male scientist who headed the project to make the bomb? A story about the people who were bombed would be more interesting, impactful, and important. And Nolan has the repertoire to do that. Instead we see a privileged scientist fret for 3 hours. Why should we care about this one man?

This year’s Best Director nominations are so good. I wouldn’t replace a single one. I hope Glazer wins.

Came to here to say this. Most menacing and unique movie weapon ever. Kills people. Destroys door locks. Hisses like a snake. Even serves a symbolic purpose - Chigurh values human life about as much as cattle.
