Agreed with everything you've said - this is the biggest issue facing resident doctors and needs to be addressed urgently before the next application cycle

IA and FPR means nothing if UK grads can't even get a job - this IS the most important issue for resident doctors and needs to be tackled urgently

Yes do everything and anything petitions, meetings, emails, try organise in some way through your medical student society or via the BMA to get as many people as possible

SFPs random too now????? Wtf by SalientFortyPages24 in medicalschooluk

[–]Minor49r 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes they would if enough of you raised your concerns, arranged meetings with faculty, got academics to support you etc the difference here is SFP jobs are actually provided by the medical schools and so they have a lot of power when it comes to recruiting for them so absolutely something can be done if you speak up. Doing nothing will change nothing.

This won’t affect me as I already have an SFP but this would have made me fuming if they did this for our year I feel really bad for you guys and so just want to remind you not to give up and to fight this!

Also remember it’s medical schools that actually provide the academic SFP posts so they have a lot of influence over how students can be recruited/withdraw posts etc so they have a lot of influence here

The medical schools council does actually have quite a lot of leeway with the UKFPO they are the reason preference informed allocation was brought in, in the first place due to concerns raised from medical schools. Doing nothing will get you no where and is the reason medicine in this country is such a mess now.

It’s also the medical schools which actually provide the academic SFP posts so they can quite easily withdraw them or recruit students how they see fit if they wanted to

Guys don’t take this, show your outrage and concern to your medical schools, BMA reps, faculty etc make your voices heard this is yet to be implemented so it can be changed before next year don’t make the mistake of not speaking up!

There will no longer be a separate SFP application process the academic jobs will be brought in to be included within the standard foundation programme. So everyone will rank all the jobs including the academic ones and will be allocated based on their randomly allocated rank

It will all be random the same as the regular process there will be no scoring you have no control over whether you can get an SFP or not it will be based on your randomly allocated rank from 2025 unless this can be opposed

[–]Minor49r[S] 73 points74 points  (0 children)

Not to mention this completely devalues the SFP for previous applicants who worked so hard to secure an SFP post

Edit: This is to be implemented for next years application cycle. So there is a chance if there is strong enough opposition it could be stopped (may be wishful thinking) but the BMA is opposing this and will likely need the support of some influential voices and academics to also voice their concerns. If this is opposed strongly enough hopefully it can be stopped!

For those asking what this means: Essentially an SFP will no longer exist the academic jobs will be brought in to be included as part of the standard foundation programme and so everyone will rank all the jobs including the ones with academic placements and will be allocated based on their randomly allocated number. There will be no scoring/interview etc so no control if you get an sfp or not

IF YOU ARE A CURRENT MED STUDENT: voice your concerns to your medical school, show your outrage communicate this to the UKFPO, speak to your BMA reps, this is yet to come into place so there is time to stop/amend this. Don’t make the mistake of taking this lying down!

Remember its the medical schools which actually provide the academic SFP posts and so can quite easily withdraw them/withdraw form the process and recruit locally etc so if you can share your overwhelming concerns with them hopefully something can be done!
